Director of Technical Accounting
Harmer is engaged by a Houston-based client to identify a strong Director of Technical Accounting. The role involves leading the company's technical accounting function, monitoring U.S. GAAP updates, and providing guidance to senior leadership on complex accounting matters.

Responsibilities
Lead the company’s technical accounting function, monitoring emerging U.S. GAAP updates and guiding the organization on their impact
Conduct and oversee research on complex accounting matters, preparing clear, concise documentation to support accounting conclusions
Serve as the primary resource for technical accounting questions across senior leadership, Controllers, and cross-functional teams
Maintain and update the company’s accounting policies, ensuring alignment with current standards
Support the rollout of new accounting policies, internal control enhancements, and process improvements
Partner with Operational Accounting and other groups to ensure policies are well understood and embedded into daily workflows
Provide technical accounting support on strategic initiatives, including M&A due diligence, integration, and other corporate projects
Coordinate closely with internal and external auditors throughout quarterly and annual audit cycles
Lead, develop, and mentor the Technical Accounting team, fostering strong performance, collaboration, and growth
Strengthen internal controls within the technical accounting function and ensure compliance with established requirements
Contribute to broader controllership and process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and reporting quality
Support special projects and additional responsibilities as needed
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting and CPA required
10+ years of progressive experience in public accounting, technical accounting, and/or financial reporting
Deep understanding of U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, SOX compliance, and internal controls
Strong technical writing skills with experience researching and documenting complex accounting matters
Preferred
Big 4 public accounting and/or transactional technical accounting experience strongly preferred
