Responsibilities

We are seeking a detail oriented, numbers person who enjoys complex analysis and technical writing to join our team of professional tax auditors as a Revenue Auditor 2 or Revenue Auditor 2 In-Training
Our Revenue Auditor’s excel in a regulatory environment where they have both the responsibility and authority to address issues of tax compliance
They enjoy knowing what they do is vital to ensuring the tax dollars critical to funding our state’s budget are collected, funding key programs and services throughout the State of Washington
In this role, you work with a variety of businesses, their affiliates, and subsidiaries ensuring they understand the tax laws applicable to their business and accurately remit their tax liability to the state
You travel throughout a designated region meeting with businesses to observe and understand how they operate, evaluate their activities and accounting records, and provide education on tax laws and compliance
You formulate the best approach to conduct an efficient audit, conduct research to understand nexus to Washington sales, determine compliance with tax laws, and prepare audits by creating excel workbooks using advanced functions
This is a diverse role where you work independently, traveling as needed and receiving per diem reimbursement for your expenses
You are also part of a collaborative team where you receive training, share ideas and information, and ensure consistent interpretation and application of law
You may also conduct team audits to manage large, complex audits and ensure you are exposed to a wide variety of businesses including manufacturers, financial institutions, contractors, health care providers, department store chains, technology, telecommunications, airlines, transportation, and petroleum companies
For those hired in-training, you will complete a two year training plan that includes three weeks of new auditor training classes designed to give you a foundation of the knowledge you will need to be successful
You will participate in training audits with senior auditors who will teach you auditing standards, processes, and techniques
They will show you how to conduct audits and document your findings and provide support as you begin to independently conduct audits
You will also get involved in team audits to enhance your ability to conduct a broad range of audits at all levels of size and complexity
Once you have acquired the field experience and demonstrated your knowledge, you will advance to the professional level

Required

Basic understanding of accounting principles, including financial statements, general ledgers, and journal entries
Experience using Excel functions and formulas to organize, analyze, and summarize data
Basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Ability to understand and solve problems by applying intermediate analytical skills, including collecting all the relevant information and data needed to reach a conclusion
Ability to synthesize data into fundamental issues and manageable components, identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected
Ability to research, interpret, and apply federal and state tax laws to determine correct tax reporting
Experience managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion
Ability to regularly evaluate progress on assignments and adjust organization, priority, time, method, etc. to meet deadlines
Ability to convey complex information in layman's terms to generate understanding and reach agreement
Ability to navigate challenging conversations and deliver unfavorable outcomes about tax implications to businesses and representatives in a professional manner
Experience communicating effectively and professionally, in both verbal and written form
Experience in composing written communication that effectively conveys ideas or information to the intended reader
Possess an openness toward changing ideas, responsibilities, strategies, and processes
Experience working with a high degree of autonomy and also participating collaboratively as part of a team

Preferred

Demonstrated professional experience in the above (required) competencies
Four or more years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, tax compliance, or tax administration
A bachelor's degree in accounting
24 semester or 36 quarter hours of college-level accounting
