Sales Tax Auditor
The State of South Dakota is looking for a Sales Tax Auditor to join their Department of Revenue. The role involves researching and auditing businesses for compliance with sales, use, and excise tax laws, while working closely with taxpayers and their representatives.

Responsibilities
Research and identify audit candidates
Audit businesses ranging in size from small local ownership to Fortune 500 companies
Evaluate each audit candidate and determine the most effective means to conduct the audit
Verify compliance with all sales, use, and excise tax laws
Work with taxpayer representatives, including attorneys, accountants, bookkeepers, and other professional staff
Present findings to taxpayers and explain tax laws, policies, and procedures
Resolve any areas of concern found as a result of audits
Travel in and out of state 10-25% of the time
Qualification
Required
A bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or economics, with prior work experience in the accounting field
Effective communicator with the ability to be decisive based on facts and training
Strong work ethic and interpersonal skills, discretion, confidentiality, and a positive attitude
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) or the capability to become knowledgeable
Knowledge of generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS) or the capability to become knowledgeable
Knowledge of standards, concepts, and objectives of auditing financial records of all business types or the capability to become knowledgeable
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
Skill to provide professional and quality customer service
Skill to be attentive to all details of the work process
Ability to manage multiple projects
Ability to deal tactfully with others
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to conduct audits of accounting systems
Ability to work with electronic data and automated accounting systems and extract necessary data
Ability to reconstruct income, sales, and expenses in order to determine taxes owed
Ability to be flexible and adapt to various situations outside of the office
Ability to read and interpret tax laws
Preferred
Prior knowledge of South Dakota tax laws is not required. Training will be provided to the successful candidate
