INTERNAL POSTING - Wildlife Biologist I

The State of South Carolina is seeking a Wildlife Biologist I to assist with data collection and management for the Coastal Research Section. The role involves overseeing data entry, participating in quality assurance and quality control, and assisting in fieldwork and outreach activities.

Responsibilities

Assisting in the management of data from fishery-independent data collection sources, as well as fishery-dependent and ancillary project sources
Overseeing data entry when necessary
Participating in regular data QA/QC
Assisting with filling internal data requests as needed
Assisting with deliverables and analyses
Coordinating QA/QC and the cataloging of physical samples from fishery-independent sampling efforts
Providing Reef Fish Survey (RFS) data manager corrections within deadlines and with minimal errors
Processing and reading assigned life history samples (e.g., otoliths, histology, video), with data QA/QC, as necessary
Adhering to current processing, reading, and safety protocols, including acceptable disagreement rates per species
Reporting progress or issues to species leader or supervisor in a timely manner
Participating, as a member of the scientific party, on all assigned Coastal Research Section fieldwork (e.g., research cruises and port-sampling activities), occasionally in a leadership role
Assisting in the preparation and maintaining of all RFS field electronic data collection and management systems (both electronic and analog)
Assisting with providing data for public-facing presentations
Participating in Division projects as needed, especially in outreach activities

Required

A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area

Preferred

Experience with survey data capture and analysis (experience configuring survey hardware and software, writing and completing QA/QC procedures on large datasets, completing data analyses of large datasets)
Knowledgeable in the identification of SE US reef fishes desired
Experience with Microsoft Suite software
Experience extracting and processing biological samples desired
Good communication skills desired
Ability to negotiate companionways and ladders in rough seas and regularly lift heavy objects (with assistance)
Ability to work long hours (12+ hour shifts) at sea up to ten (10) days at a time, occasionally on weekends or at night
