Responsibilities
Manage a multi-shift team of operators and support staff in the Materials Work Center, including performance management, coaching, counseling, disciplinary processes, and scheduling to ensure consistent coverage across shifts
Coach, mentor, and guide employees toward daily success, fostering skill development, cross-training, and a high-performance culture
Lead safety initiatives, conduct audits, provide training, enforce proper PPE usage, and promote a strong safety culture across all shifts
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (including R&D) to develop and optimize manufacturing processes for large cast plastic manufacturing and machining. Utilize Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to identify improvement opportunities, reduce waste, enhance efficiency, and drive continuous improvement projects from concept to implementation
Establish, monitor, and report on key operational KPIs such as but not limited to yield rates, scrap/waste reduction, material utilization. Analyze data to drive decisions and achieve targets aligned with organizational goals
Maintain the material manufacturing process equipment, molds and work area; and collaborate with maintenance team for larger projects or where appropriate
Provide close technical support to the Research & Development team on new material formulations, polymer additives, polyurethane/thermoset resin development, process improvements, raw material onboarding, and production trials
Document processes, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and work instructions, and training to production teams as needed
Perform routine chemical and physical testing of raw material(s) and/or finished part(s)
Capture, maintain and document data records as needed
Prioritize testing schedule and required material(s) for testing
Execute test plan(s)/case(s) in a timely manner
Attend regular production and EOS meetings
Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments for new manufacturing processes
Provide technical support to production teams, troubleshooting issues related to material manufacturing
Collaborate with suppliers to source materials and components for material manufacturing, ensuring compliance with specifications and quality standards
Stay updated on industry trends, advancements in manufacturing technology, and best practices in large cast plastic manufacturing and machining
Adhere to all chemical safety regulations and company policies, promoting a culture of safety within the manufacturing environment
Estimate production times, capacities, staffing requirements, and related costs and provide information and recommendations for management decisions
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
Basic understanding of polymers, resins, polyurethane/thermoset materials, and manufacturing machinery
Proficiency in Six Sigma methodologies and Operational Excellence/Lean principles (Green Belt certification or equivalent experience preferred)
Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for mechanical design and drafting
Ability to navigate general and equipment-specific software (including PLC-controlled systems)
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Familiarity with chemical safety and safe handling of chemicals
Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex technical issues and propose innovative solutions
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with diverse teams, stakeholders, and multi-shift operations
Preferred
Experience managing or leading teams in a manufacturing environment preferred
2+ years of experience in manufacturing process engineering, preferably in the plastics or rubber industry
Proficiency in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, with experience in process improvement projects
Experience with polyurethanes(s) and thermoset resin(s)
Experience with PLC controlled manufacturing machines
Familiarity with polymer additives and polymer formulations
