LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Laboratory Technician to perform clinical procedures for patient preparation and research protocols. The role involves specimen management, administrative support, and assisting healthcare team members with treatment protocols.

Responsibilities
To perform all duties related to the preparation, distribution, cataloging, and storage of lab specimens for testing
To adhere to departmental specimen identification policies and quality controls
To utilize lab and hospital information systems and provide general administrative support to the laboratory staff in support of laboratory operations, such as filing, record maintenance, responding to client calls, and mail delivery
To assist physician or other healthcare team member with completion of treatment/protocol
To perform simple, non-invasive patient procedures according to applicable policy and/or protocol
May perform various clerical and/or lab duties as requested
Responds to the unique needs of all patients
Qualification
Required
Associate's degree in Biological Science or health-related field required
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Depending on the unit/department or if the position works directly with patients, Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required or required to be obtained within 30 days of employment
Must be able to recognize the rights and responsibilities of patient confidentiality
Ability to multi-task
Must be self-directed/self-motivated
Must have good communication and interpersonal skills
Must be able to perform a variety of duties often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure
Must be able to accept responsibility for the direction, control and planning of one's own work
Must be able to perform effectively when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual or dangerous situations
Must be able to relate to others in a manner which creates a sense of teamwork and cooperation
Must be able to communicate effectively with people from every socioeconomic, cultural and educational background
