Commodity and Compliance Inspector
The South Carolina Department of Agriculture is seeking a Commodity and Compliance Inspector. This role involves performing regulatory inspections of hemp and fruit and vegetable commodities, issuing inspection certificates, and ensuring compliance with agricultural practices. The inspector will also provide administrative support and communicate with farmers and the public regarding regulations.

Responsibilities
Performing regulatory inspections of hemp pursuant to the SC Hemp Farming Act and the SC State plan, as well as performing regulatory Fruit and Vegetable Inspections pursuant to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Federal-State Inspection Service (FSIS) and SC Acts and Plans
Issue inspection certificates for commodities inspected
Performing USDA Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Harmonized GAP (HGAP) and HGAP Plus audits
Collecting hemp samples, conducting pre-harvest and post-harvest inspections, along with verification audits
Verifying Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates, commodity varieties, permit locations, and farmer information
Transporting samples to shipping location or to SCDA laboratory for testing
Inspecting hemp processing facilities for compliance with the SC State Plan
Assisting with maintaining accurate files, documents, and statements
Communicating with farmers and members of the public regarding the program and regulations
Providing administrative support to the Commodities and Compliance Inspection office up to three days per week to include, but not limited to ordering supplies, covering phones, and assisting with overall business operations of office
Assist with operations of the Phillips Market Center (PMC) to include setting up/taking down tables/chairs, assisting clients, and answering calls
Working after-hours and/or events
Qualification
Required
Associate degree or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
At least two years' experience in agricultural programs with emphasis on commodity inspection, production, and marketing
A high school diploma and four years' experience in agricultural programs may be substituted, subject to approval from the State Human Resources Division
Valid state driver's license and ability to drive a vehicle
Must pass federal and SC background check
No previous drug convictions
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences, business or production, animal science, horticulture, plant science or soil science
Knowledge of agriculture/horticulture techniques
Knowledge of data collection, tracking, recording and analysis
Strong customer service background
