District Highway Sign Technician I or II - Big Spring, TX
The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a District Highway Sign Technician I or II to perform transportation-related work involving the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signs and related equipment. The role includes maintaining inventory, operating specialized tools, and assisting with emergency situations as needed.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions
Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products
Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related materials
Measures and calculates amount of materials needed
Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties
Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
Operates radios
Performs and maintains inventory of signs
Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck
Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Orders supplies and materials from district shop
Orders signs from the regional sign shop
Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs)
Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs
Qualification
Required
Education: None in formal education
Experience: NONE. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). No supervisory experience required. Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. No Substitution
Must have a valid Commercial Class 'A' Driver License (CDL) at time of application with an N Endorsement, and with no restrictions - This position requires you to drive a state vehicle for TxDOT

Feeling-determining size, shape, temperature or texture of objects
Talking expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing
Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations
Preferred
Education: None in formal education
Experience: 1 YEAR Sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). No supervisory experience required. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis
Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates and expenses
