Responsibilities

Independently schedule and conduct inspections of scales, meters, and other measuring devices used in commerce
Verify device accuracy to ensure consumers and establishments receive fair treatment
Identify and explain violations to business owners and operators
Complete inspection reports to document compliance with state and federal standards
Represent the Department of Public Safety as a professional, knowledgeable resource in your community

Required

Valid driver's license required
Must have and maintain a Class A or B CDL with Air Brakes and the ability to drive a Manual Transmission
Subject to random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow-up, and return-to-duty drug testing
Mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot devices and equipment
Clear communication skills and confidence in explaining laws, regulations, handbook requirements, and inspection findings to business owners
Strong organizational skills and self-motivation to manage an independent schedule
Ability to repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, convert units of measurement, and perform algebraic functions
Ability to read and comprehend written directions, policies, statutes, and regulations
Ability to develop strong working relationships with the public, partner agencies, and fellow inspectors
Ability to manage time effectively, develop efficient schedules, and meet deadlines
Ability to address requests and solve problems professionally as they arise
Ability to make logical, reasonable decisions and set priorities
Ability to adapt to a variety of personalities and handle challenging situations constructively

Preferred

Familiarity with agriculture or commercial trade is helpful but not required
Weights & Measures Program related to scales and meters
NIST Handbooks 44, 130, and 133
State and federal laws and regulations related to inspections
