Grossing Technician I (Full Time)

They are seeking a Grossing Technician I to perform tissue description, dissection, and sectioning for diagnostic evaluation, while adhering to Standard Operating Procedures and maintaining a safe working environment.

Responsibilities

Performs tissue description, dissection, and sectioning for optimal diagnostic evaluation of small uncomplicated skin specimens such as shaves, punches and excisions
Reviews specimens for completeness and accuracy, including site and patient identification
Selects appropriate processing times and special procedures for tissues (nails, alopecias, hair mounts)
Troubleshoots and resolves technical problems involving methodology, technique, and instrumentation utilization in the gross area/room
Performs maintenance and quality control on instruments as applicable
Maintains a safe working environment
Monitors supply and inventory
Perform other histology-related work as needed (embedding, microtomy, block/slide filing) once properly trained on all related SOPs prior to completing any work
Actively supports and assists in implementation and monitoring of quality control and quality assurance policies

Required

Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed in in the education required section) OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing
Training and a post training assessment for all role-applicable SOPs and Laboratory Compliance workflows must be completed after hire but before any laboratory work can be completed. A competency assessment will occur at one month before independent work is permitted. Role specific SOPs and Laboratory Compliance workflows are outlined in the Pathology Training Program Smartsheet
All Grossing Technicians are to complete 12 hours of continuing education per year per the laboratory's Continuing Education SOP. Competency assessments will be performed upon hire and throughout the year per the laboratory's Competency Assessment SOP. New Hire and Annual Training, including all required training sessions for all new and updated SOPs and updates to software systems as applicable
This job operates in a professional lab environment and may potentially be exposed to chemical, hazardous and biological samples. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines
While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to talk; hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position also requires long duration of sitting and working on a computer. May require lifting up to 25 pounds without the aid of a device or a second person
Employee may be expected to travel up to 25% or less of their time from their home office
An associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR have education and training equivalent to such degree that includes: At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include - 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry in any combination

Preferred

Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain familiarity on-the-job with grossing techniques; experience in large-scale organization or high-volume production environment preferred to gain seasoned familiarity with processing specimens in production environment
Should be familiar with most major techniques for staining and special staining. Analytical skills necessary for processing slides under tight deadlines and general supervision; should have ability to identify specific specimens for supervisory follow-up
