Responsibilities

Plan, prioritize, and review the work of crews at a job site as they perform maintenance and equipment operations
Develop schedules and methods to accomplish job site goals, ensuring work is completed in a timely and efficient manner
Participate in evaluating the activities of staff, recommending improvements and modifications
Provide on-the-job training to employees; work with employees to correct deficiencies; provide training to lower level staff in the proper operation of equipment and the appropriate performance of maintenance duties
Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; perform daily DMV vehicle inspections; document and inspect equipment for safety and wear
Perform minor repairs on equipment and report the need for major repairs; check and adjust fluid level; grease and lubricate moving parts, as required
Operate a backhoe and/or a truck/backhoe unit or crane in support of construction operations; perform the most complex and difficult equipment operation work and operate equipment to meet job requirements, as required
Perform additional construction and maintenance tasks such as concrete work, truck driving, asphalt spreading, jackhammering, and repair activities when equipment is not in use
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service
Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures

Required

Two years of responsible experience equivalent to an Equipment Operator II in the City of Modesto
High School diploma or GED equivalency
Possession of a Class A or Class B Commercial California driver's license with appropriate endorsements, as assigned, is required within 60 days of appointment
When assigned, possession of a valid crane operator certificate, issued by the National Commission of Crane Operators, is required within six months of assignment
Knowledge of principles and practices of technical and functional supervision and training
Knowledge of operation and maintenance requirements of trucks and heavy power-driven equipment
Knowledge of practices, methods, and materials used in construction and maintenance work
Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations
Knowledge of safe work practices; trench safety and shoring methods
Knowledge of working in and around open trenches, traffic, construction equipment, and utilities
Knowledge of traffic control on construction sites
Ability to provide technical and functional supervision over assigned staff; effectively train staff
Ability to perform the most complex duties pertaining to equipment operation; operate a backhoe as well as other heavy power-driven equipment
Ability to locate utilities and be familiar with Underground Service Alert (U.S.A.) procedures
Ability to perform a variety of skilled construction and maintenance tasks
Ability to load equipment on tractors for transport
Ability to learn the geography and street system of the area, based on assignment
Ability to read blue prints; participate in construction meetings
Ability to perform maintenance on assigned equipment in an efficient, safe manner
Ability to follow appropriate procedures for handling hazardous materials such as asbestos
Ability to work independently or in a crew situation, as assigned
Ability to set up and work in construction sites at night, in adverse weather, and/or in emergencies
Ability to know and understand assigned activities and observe safety rules
Ability to interpret work orders and explain jobs to other employees
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Benefits

Health, dental and vision coverage is provided.
Coverage in the amount of $20,000 is provided by the City.
Disability insurance coverage is provided by the City, at City cost.
With a matching contribution by the employee, the City will contribute 1% of salary, (increasing to 2% after 15 years of service) to a voluntary 457 Plan.
$2,880 initial deposit provided upon completion of a two (2) year vesting period.
Available to employees and dependents. Plan provides up to 3 counseling visits per incident, at City expense.
Bachelor's degree pays in the amount of 2.5% of salary and Master's degree pays in the amount of 5% of salary.
Employees who pass a review panel and are needed in this capacity by the department, will receive 3 hours of Bilingual Leave Time per pay period into their Compensatory Time Off (CTO) balance.
