Sign Technician 1
NEOGOV is part of Island County, seeking a Traffic Sign Technician to perform a variety of semiskilled tasks involved in the production and maintenance of road signs. The role includes installing, repairing, and evaluating signage on county-maintained roads according to MUTCD standards.

Responsibilities
Maintains signs in Island County
Monitors bulletin boards daily in each road shop for new issues regarding signage that may have been reported by the community or noted by county employees
Constantly evaluates all signage when driving county roads for maintenance, repair, and replacement needs and for MUTCD code standards
Installs traffic control, warning, street, construction, and other regulatory signs in county maintained areas
Cleans, maintains, and services road signs as needed and/or reported
Determines appropriate signage and placement of signs and barriers per MUTCD codes
Installs and maintains any and all Grant signage as needed
Checks and maintains minimal inventory on the truck for sign maintenance and repair daily
Installs and maintains solar-powered signs
Makes signs as needed when signs are stolen, vandalized or need replacement due to age and weatherization
Utilizes a graphic computer systems in the manufacturing of traffic signs, layout designs and storage of designs in the computer for future use and records
Determine sign layout for fabrication
Fabricates signs in the sign shop through application of pressure sensitive adhesive material to metal sign blanks
Sets and places traffic counting equipment
Marks roads
Assembles equipment and supplies: (i.e., stencils, line stripping machine, line paint, chalk string line, tape measures, orange cones, caution tape...)
Assures the safety of the painters and drivers by proper signage and cones, flagger placement where indicated
For parking lots, posts time frame signage in order to ensure that there will be no overspray to vehicles
Measures and ensures proper placement/alignment before painting or tape
Stencils placed where needed
Paints or applies heat-sensitive tape where indicated
Applies reflection glass beads where indicated to ensure visibility and reflection at night
Removes tapes and cones when it is dry enough to be driven over and cleans up supplies and project signage
Qualification
Required
High school education or GED
5+ years' experience making and installing signs
Valid WA State Driver's License
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral diagram, or schedule form
Ability to uses graphic instructions such as: blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts or water plats to select, fabricate, and install signs and other traffic control devices in property location/order
Considerable knowledge of the safe and proper use and care of manual, electrical, gas and hydraulic powered tools and equipment used in the assigned functional area
Knowledge of and ability to uses tools such as: metal shears, power sanders, power grinders, drill press, portable jackhammer, fork lift, vehicle foot-o-meter to accomplish work
Considerable knowledge of the proper placement of barricades and signage for road and lane closures needed for the protection of vehicular and pedestrian traffic
Ability to read and interpret a variety of temperatures for extended periods of time
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with other employees and the public
Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic
While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee is regularly required to lift, move or carry objects up to 100 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, utilize feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, stand, crouching or navigating surfaces; bending body downward and forward by bending spine and legs; move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hand and finger, handle or feel objects; and to reach with hands and arms
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to fumes, odors, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, excessive noise, vehicular traffic and dampness/humidity
Ability to dig for long periods of time when replacing signs
