Governor's Summer Intern - INDOT - Traffic Engineering

Responsibilities

Conduct field work to collect data and draft work orders as part of initiatives to enhance or preserve traffic safety on the state roadway network within the Crawfordsville District
Project intiatives that the Intern will be expected to work on include:
Signage to guide drivers in avoiding wrong-way entry at 4-lane divided intersections
Signage to improve curve visibility to guide drivers in avoiding roadway departure at curves
Similar additional initiatives can be pursued to add or modify traffic control devices (such as signs and markings) at road segments and intersections with certain common characteristics to ensure consistent messaging to drivers
Consult the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) to forumlate recommendations to the District Traffic Engineer on changes to traffic control devices needed to the field
Prepare a presentation for the Crawfordsville District to reflect on projects’ accomplishments and skills/experience gained during the internship period
Other duties as assigned

Required

Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
Indiana Driver's License required to operate state vehicles
Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
Analytical skills
Ability to handle multiple projects
Ability to operate computer tools, including GIS and various Microsoft office software products
Good research and writing skills
Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
