The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education is seeking a Museum Retail Store Associate (Visitor Services Assistant 1) to join the team at the New York State Museum Store. This role involves providing exceptional customer service, assisting with daily retail operations, and enhancing the visitor experience while supporting the Museum’s educational mission.

Responsibilities

Welcome and assist visitors and customers, providing courteous, informed service about Museum Store products and Museum offerings
Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system, process sales transactions, returns, and exchanges in accordance with cash handling procedures
Maintain accurate records of transactions and ensure the security of cash and inventory
Support inventory management, including receiving, unpacking, labeling, restocking, and organizing merchandise
Monitor stock levels and communicate restocking needs to the Director of Retail Operations
Assist with the arrangement and upkeep of merchandise displays to ensure visual appeal and alignment with Museum themes and seasonal changes
Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly retail environment; perform light cleaning and organizational duties as needed
Participate as a team member in achieving sales and service goals, maintaining a professional, cooperative work environment
Provide information about the Museum, exhibits, programs, and visitor amenities as needed
Contribute to special retail events, promotional activities, and collaborative Museum initiatives

Required

Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive service as a Visitor Services Assistant 1
Candidates must have two years of experience in the visitor/customer service environment in a cultural institution
College study may be substituted for up to two years of general experience based on 30 semester credit hours being equal to one year of qualifying service
