Director, Nuclear Technology & Engineering

Responsibilities

Serve as the organization's senior technical authority on naval pressurized water reactor (PWR) systems, including A1B-class and S9G reactor plants
Lead technical strategy development for reactor system integration, balance-of-plant design, and grid interconnection
Provide technical direction on highly enriched uranium (HEU) fuel management in coordination with Y-12 National Security Complex and NNSA
Oversee technical aspects of DOE proposal development, including feasibility studies, safety analyses, and engineering documentation
Develop and maintain technical roadmaps for reactor deployment, commissioning, and operations
Lead or oversee BOP system design and integration, including steam turbine generators, main condensers, and feedwater/condensate systems
Direct engineering of electrical systems including main generators, transformers, switchgear, and grid interconnection infrastructure
Oversee design of cooling water systems, including intake/outfall structures and thermal discharge management
Manage integration between the nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) and conventional power conversion equipment
Coordinate with turbine OEMs, electrical equipment suppliers, and BOP EPC contractors
Ensure BOP design meets TVA grid interconnection requirements and NERC reliability standards
Develop plant heat balance, thermal efficiency optimization, and auxiliary power requirements
Represent HGP in technical discussions with DOE, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Naval Reactors, and other federal agencies
Interface with NAVSEA 08 and relevant Navy commands on reactor technology transfer and operational requirements
Support regulatory approval processes under DOE's accelerated framework, distinct from traditional NRC licensing
Build and maintain relationships with national laboratory technical staff, DOE program managers, and key congressional stakeholders
Present technical briefings to investors, board members, and government officials
Lead the technical team through all project phases: selection negotiations, detailed engineering, construction oversight, and commissioning
Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing nuclear engineering team as the organization scales
Manage technical scope, schedule, and budget for engineering activities
Coordinate with EPC contractors, architect-engineers, and specialty consultants on reactor system and BOP integration
Establish engineering standards, quality assurance protocols, and technical review processes
Champion nuclear safety culture throughout the organization
Ensure compliance with DOE orders, NNSA requirements, and applicable nuclear safety regulations
Oversee development of safety analysis documentation, including Documented Safety Analyses (DSA) and Technical Safety Requirements (TSR)
Support security planning for special nuclear materials and classified information

Required

Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related technical discipline from an accredited institution
Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in naval nuclear propulsion, nuclear engineering, power plant engineering, or related fields
Minimum 3 years in leadership or supervisory roles with responsibility for technical teams or watch sections
U.S. citizenship required
Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q clearance and HRP (Human Reliability Program) certification

Preferred

Master's degree or higher preferred but not required for candidates with exceptional operational experience
Direct experience with U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (Naval Reactors / NAVSEA 08) strongly preferred
Experience with A1B-class (Ford-class carrier), S9G (Virginia-class submarine), or other naval reactor plants highly desirable
Experience interfacing with senior government officials, military leadership, or utility executives preferred
Assignment at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory (BAPL) or Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL)
Experience at Naval Reactors Headquarters in Washington, D.C
Ford-class carrier or Virginia-class submarine construction experience at Newport News or Electric Boat
Commercial nuclear power plant experience, particularly in BOP systems or plant engineering
Experience with steam turbine generators (GE, Siemens, or equivalent OEMs)
Grid interconnection or utility transmission engineering experience
DOE national laboratory experience (Oak Ridge, Idaho, Los Alamos, or Sandia)
Experience with DOE Loan Programs Office (LPO) or large federal infrastructure projects
NNSA or Y-12 National Security Complex experience, particularly related to HEU operations
Professional Engineer (PE) license
Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) certification or equivalent
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
