Supervising Attorney – Legal Services
CalSTRS is the California State Teachers' Retirement System, seeking an Attorney Supervisor for its Legal Services unit. The role involves supervising a team of attorneys, providing legal advice, and managing complex legal matters related to the organization's programs and policies.

Responsibilities
Provides in-house legal review, advice and counseling to internal business programs
In-house representation includes negotiating and reviewing contracts; collections; evaluating and creating legislation, statutes and regulations; advising CalSTRS staff and executive management on the Teachers' Retirement Law; felony forfeiture; and providing general legal support
Attorneys also work with outside counsel on various transactional and litigation matters, including transactional real estate matters and subrogation claims
Attorneys may assist other legal units on an as-needed basis
Assists the Assistant General Counsel in supervising, assigning, planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, reviewing, and monitoring the work of staff in the Legal Services unit
Handles the most difficult and complex legal matters and confers with the Assistant General Counsel and management on policy and procedures as they relate to Legal Services
Qualification
Required
Active membership with the California State Bar
Excellent communication and active listening skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with other CalSTRS employees, our members, and their beneficiaries
Exhibits professional demeanor, and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations
Strong organizational skills, ability to set priorities, effectively manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines within challenging and strict time constraints
Ability to consult, coach, and mentor peers and staff
Highly motivated self-starter with a strong work ethic and a high degree of integrity
Ability to monitor performance against expectations and hold management and staff accountable for accurate and timely work products
Ability to manage and resolve conflicts
Strong commitment to delivering quality service and providing options to customers with diplomacy
Benefits
Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025. This program reduces employees' monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 4.62% in exchange for 8 hours of leave credits for the duration of the program.
