2026 Summer Seasonal - Park Maintenance
The City of Bloomington is accepting applications for Park Maintenance Seasonal positions for Summer 2026. The role involves performing various types of manual labor and equipment operation in Bloomington parks, including mowing, forestry work, and athletic field preparation.

Responsibilities
Serves as a City representative by demonstrating a professional demeanor and positive attitude
Operates, inspects, and maintains equipment and tools such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, steel wheel rollers, pickups, air compressor with related tools, chain saws, shovels, rakes and miscellaneous equipment and tools as apparent or assigned. Provide routine service maintenance where needed (grease, oil, gas, etc.)
When directed, assists in maintenance duties in any of the five Public Works Maintenance Division sections
Keeps assigned lead informed of important developments concerning assigned functions
Maintains effective working relationships with other employees and the public
Responsible to work overtime, shift changes, or be on call as necessary or assigned
Adheres to and keeps current on safety rules and procedures, and any work rules and policies that pertain to the Park Maintenance Division
Performs job responsibilities in climatic extremes, in confined spaces, and/or from aerial lift equipment
Performs other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned
Utilize large scale and small-scale mowers to maintain all turf areas
Operate weed whips, fertilizers, tractors and other equipment needed to complete tasks
Aerate and overseed large scale field
Utilize hand tools and power tools to help accomplish tasks
Daily and weekly mower maintenance during growing season
Grooming: Drag infield skin and warning track areas with tractor and pull-behind drag, hand drag, and a variety of hand tools
Mounds and Home Plates: Rebuild, reshape and repair clay mounds and home plates
Grading: Use a variety of equipment to grade athletic fields and hockey rinks
Base Anchors: Build and install base anchors at the correct level on ballfields
Turf Transitions: Edge, broom, blowout, flush and remove weeds along turf transitions
Field Layout: Layout and paint soccer, football, lacrosse, baseball, softball fields using a utility vehicle and a line painting robot
Fencing: Replace and repair fencing around athletic fields, and repair backstops and padding
Weed Control: Use a variety of methods to control weeds including herbicides and hand tools
Soccer Goals: Build and install soccer goals and netting
It will be mandatory for employees to work occasional weekends and evenings to support games and tournaments throughout the year
Setting up for shelter reservation events, cleaning facility
Clean and maintain restrooms, disinfect toilets and surfaces, sweep and mop floors
Operate floor scrubbers and other equipment
Backpack blowing outdoor dining areas, cleaning tables
Maintain cleaning inventory, placing orders for new products when needed
Empty trash and recycling bins
Monitoring trash needs in the parks, cleaning vandalism/graffiti
Working with pool needs at BFAC and splashpad, vacuuming the pool, testing pool water, cleaning the pool deck, minor repairs, etc
Formal Landscape Maintenance: Design, installation, pruning and trimming of plants and shrubs, weed control, seasonal clean-up, watering, mulching
Build and repair fences (split rail, chain link, etc.), gates, park signs, retaining walls, bridge decking, miscellaneous structures
Managing and maintaining irrigation systems in city’s parks, properties and athletic field complexes, seasonal start up and winterization, system inspection and testing, sprinkler head adjustments, monitor and adjust controllers, troubleshooting electrical issues, repair breaks, locating wire, mapping with GIS on tablet
Tilling with tractor, filling water tanks using fire hydrants, compost removal
Inspection and repair of targets, shelters, shooting lanes
Assessing conditions, weed control, debris removal
Complete miscellaneous tasks to assist in completion of Park Maintenance projects
General maintenance of playground equipment
General maintenance of court amenities
Use of various hand tools and power tools: weed whip, propane torch, hand saw, drill/impact, backpack blower, sledgehammer, etc
Assist with various types of playground repairs and replacements
Container repairs
General maintenance of playground and court surfacing: rake, level, sweep, weed control (hand pulling, weed whipping, herbicide application, propane torch, hand saws), leaf blowing, add playground surfacing
Support aerial bucket and clam truck operation
Commercial grade chipper operation
Diseased tree inspections
Raking, leaf blowing
Setting up safe work zone (signage, equipment placement)
Front end loader/ skid steer operation
Perform proper pruning and removal practices
Planting and maintenance of trees
Safe operation and upkeep of cutting tools (chainsaws, brush cutters, hand saws, pole saws, pruners)
Utilizing proper PPE during operations
Invasive Species Management: Hand pulling, cutting, mowing, weed whipping, herbicide application, and monitoring of invasive species and noxious weeds
Ecological Restoration: Assisting with conversion of areas to native vegetation through seed bed preparation, seeding, planting, establishment maintenance, tree removal, tree planting, watering, seed collection, seed cleaning, and invasive species removal utilizing equipment such as tractors, drill seeders, UTVs, seed spreader, sprayers, tillers, and small equipment
Implementing prescribed burns, installing burn breaks, and burning brush piles
Identifying volunteer opportunities, communicating with resident groups, event setup, volunteer guidance, and event participation
Maintaining paved, wood chipped, and natural trails by sweeping, trail blowing, wood chipping, mowing, tree trimming, and clearing encroaching vegetation
Qualification
Required
Good mechanical aptitude - ability to readily learn to operate small hand tools and minor equipment such as saws, trimmers, riding mowers, and hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic equipment
Ability to read, understand, and follow written and oral instructions including safety rules
Ability to wear personal protective safety gear/equipment
Ability to do some lifting, bending, climbing, reaching, overhead pushing, and pulling (may lift up to 75 pounds)
Ability to perform job responsibilities in climatic extremes
Ability to work from aerial lift equipment
Ability to perform routine repair and maintenance tasks
Ability to tolerate paint, chemical solvents, and herbicides
Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision
Ability to communicate effectively with employees and the general public
Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a crew or team
Ability to work overtime, shift changes, including evenings and weekends, or holidays
Ability to utilize scheduling software such as WhenToWork
Ability to use Esri products such as Survey 1-2-3, Field Maps, etc
Valid unrestricted driver's license
Must be 16 years of age or older
