Responsibilities

Ensuring safe, secure, compliant, modernized, and upgraded operations of plumbing systems and and supporting peripheral equipment throughout the facility
Supervises the domestic and waste water facilities as the Operator in Responsible Charge
Designs, installs, repairs, modifies, inspects water and sewage piping, backflow prevention devices, steam, and condensate piping and controls, water wells, chlorination, wet and dry fire suppression devices and systems, heat exchanges, steam and natural gas devices, underground waste, water, steam and natural gas lines, as well as medical and dental vacuum pumps
Participating in large scale capital improvement projects, reviewing plans and coordinating with contractors, Physical Plant Manager, Custody/Control and other facility supervisors to ensure efficiency, security and safety
Monitoring expenditures, operating budgets, inventory, generating reports and ensuring efficient use of resources in accordance with fiscal rules
Participating in the development of security policies and enforcing these policies by personally participating in searching, escorting, transporting, inspecting and physically restraining inmates as needed
Supervising assigned staff, assigning tasks, creating work schedules, monitoring time, approving leave requests and completing payroll documentation
Participating in hiring process, ensuring accurate position descriptions, monitoring staff work practices, skills and abilities and implementing mandatory Performance Management Program (PMP)
Coaching and mentoring assigned staff, promoting retention by focusing on professionalism, teamwork, individual and unit accountability, clear communication of goals and expectations and efficient and effective operations
Training employees in the CDOC policy and methods of supervision, agency Administrative Regulations, facility Operational Memoranda, Posted Operational Rules and Post Orders and ensuring completion of mandatory annual training
Resolving informal grievances
This position may participate in the Duty Officer rotation; is subject to facility call back or working additional hours/shifts to maintain safety and security; may be required to supervise additional staff in the absence of another supervisor, work outside during inclement weather, in high, tight, or confined spaces and/or in close proximity to industrial equipment
Position is subject to call back and working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safe and secure operations and to respond to emergency equipment problems or failures
Position requires the ability to climb ladders, work in high, tight and/or confined spaces and the ability to quickly respond to emergency situations such as inmate fights, escapes, or facility fire

Required

Active Journeyman Plumber License in good standing issued by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). A copy of your license must be attached
You will be required to obtain a Master Plumber License within a year of filling this position
Back flow, domestic and wastewater operator (class D). Have or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire
Six (6) years of employment as a plumber, performing predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on residential or commercial facilities. Minimum one (1) year experience must have been as a supervisor over fully-trained, journey-level employees
Proficiency in supervision of personnel to include strong interpersonal skills with the ability to coach and mentor assigned staff to promote retention by focusing on professionalism, teamwork, individual and unit accountability, clear communication of goals and expectations and effective and efficient operations
Proficiency in the preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance of plumbing systems and their supporting peripheral equipment
Ability to read blueprints, conduct relevant research and create an estimate of time, material, labor and cost for projects
Ability to plan and ensure effective implementation of best methods and strategies to accomplish safe, compliant operations at optimal efficiency
Comprehensive understanding of CDOC Performance Management Program (PMP) policy and effective and thoughtful performance management oversight
Ability to create a cohesive team while mentoring and motivating assigned staff

Must be 21 years of age
Possess a valid driver's license
Possess a high school diploma or GED
Have NO felony convictions
Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States to be appointed to this position
Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training
Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations
Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner
Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders

Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
Willing and able to travel
Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule
TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire

Preferred

Current back flow, domestic water operator and wastewater certifications
Background in HVAC and Boiler maintenance and repair
