Director, McNair Scholars Program

Central Washington University is recruiting a Director for the McNair Scholars Program to enhance the vision for the University. This role involves providing leadership for the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program, including planning, implementing, and evaluating the program to increase participant numbers and ensure compliance with federal objectives.

Responsibilities

Administer, implement and evaluate program goals and objectives in accordance with federal goals and objectives to enable scholars to apply and be admitted to graduate programs successfully
Recruit and select students in conjunction with the Advisory Committee
Work with the faculty coordinator and other university administrators to supervise tracking of scholars' academic progress, develop curriculum, and implement McNair academic courses with existing university programs and services
Develop and implement scholarly activities that include acting as a liaison with graduate schools and coordinating travel to graduate schools and professional conferences
Represent the McNair Program to the university community and in required conferences as stipulated in the grant, typically one national conference per year
Supervise the maintenance of all program files and records (following federal regulations), computer operations (including McNair Scholar and scholarship database), student computers, and student resource library
Communicate with federal program officials regarding grant negotiations, program changes, reports, and site visits
Manage McNair public relations, including a website, scholarly journal, newsletter, brochures, flyers, and other promotional material
Coordinate communication with the McNair Advisory Committee
Recruit and train faculty as research and teaching mentors for McNair Scholars
Prepare annual and final performance reports as required by the U.S. Department of Education
Oversee, monitor, independently track the development and execution of program budgets in accordance with federal, state and university policies
Makes appropriate fiscal decisions in accordance with grant objectives and state, federal and University guidelines
Develops and implements systems and practices to ensure optimal operations and integration of budget records from MyCWU, FMS, Grants Budget Analyst and Financial Aid Office
Assists with writing and preparing grant applications to continue program services (grant preparation duty will be completed under state funding)
Ensures compliance with all grant partner expectations
Monitors student participation, ensuring compliance with eligibility criteria and accomplishment of objectives
Actively engage in recruitment and hiring new employees
Clearly define performance expectations, ensure accountability, and provide ongoing informal feedback, coaching, and mentoring. Conduct formal performance evaluations
Ensure employees have necessary resources
Oversee and direct the work of staff; serve as mentor, coach, and leader, and resolve complaints or issues
Promote professional development opportunities
Develop and foster supportive working relationships, motivation and engagement
Communicate information to staff on an ongoing basis to influence staff engagement and to be a part of a larger community
Take corrective action in a timely manner
Recognize and reward employees for good performance
Schedule employee work hours/shifts; monitor hours worked; approve payable time and absence requests
Adjust leadership style as needed to achieve result
Recognize value of and promote a workplace culture of belonging, creativity, and teamwork

Required

Master's degree or higher AND three years of experience in a student-centered, higher education program
Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with campus officials, faculty, staff, parents, students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds and experiences
Strong written and oral communication to include organizational and administrative skills
Experience in program development and evaluation for academic support programs
Experience with administrative skills, including budgeting, personnel management, and/or experience writing grant proposals and reports
Excellent time management and record-keeping skills
Computer skills that demonstrate the ability to use software applications to produce written correspondence, create and maintain spreadsheets, and manage databases
Demonstrated ability and/or experience fostering a supportive and effective workplace while working with students and/or colleagues to uphold institutional excellence
OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position

Preferred

Earned doctorate from an accredited university
Experience writing, preparing, and administering Department of Education (DOE) grants
Research experience
Experience designing and/or implementing high-impact educational programs
Demonstrated participation in programs designed to promote student success
Demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students through various activities
