Assistant Attorney General (Attorney II) - Post Conviction Relief
The South Carolina Office of the Attorney General is seeking an Assistant Attorney General to work in the Post Conviction Relief Section. This role involves performing professional legal work, representing the State in court hearings, and handling appeals related to post-conviction relief cases.

Responsibilities
Review applications, calendar returns, and prepare proper pleadings and responses to applications, motions, or other pleadings
Represent the State at court hearings as scheduled in assigned circuits and elsewhere, as required
Prepare all proposed orders requested by the presiding judge
Represent the State on all appeals of post-conviction relief cases handled in the circuit court when appealed to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. File and serve appeals onbehalf of the State in cases in which relief is granted when approved by the Deputy AttorneyGeneral or Chief Deputy Attorney General in the interest of the State of South Carolina.Prepares any necessary petitions, returns, or briefs for filing with the appropriate appellate court. Represents the State at oral argument when scheduled
Prepare a roster of cases to be heard and issue it to the appropriate parties or individuals. Ensure that witness letters and subpoenas are prepared and forwarded for mailing and/or service. Arrange for the transportation of post-conviction relief applicants to the hearings. Identify witnesses needed to defend the PCR action. Mail rosters at least four weeks prior tothe term
Collects and reviews incoming mail, provides appropriate processing instructions, and ensures all due dates are noted on the attorney and legal assistant calendar. The attorney must place his or her initials on all mail and incoming letters, pleadings, e-mails (that are filed), or other documents to verify that the attorney has reviewed the matter
Performs related duties as required or assigned by the division director or section supervisor, such as handling cases outside the primary subject assignment
Promptly advises victim advocates of the development and/or status of any assigned cases
Is responsible for ensuring LawBase and Worldox are properly and promptly updated to reflect action and documents generated/received in all cases for which the attorney is responsible
Must maintain an accurate calendar of all due dates
Respond to telephone calls by the end of each day. Timely response to written requests for advice or assistance from Solicitors, attorneys, and law enforcement entities regarding post-conviction relief matters or issues
Is responsible for maintaining 'shake-proof' files and promptly closing all files
Qualification
Required
J.D. Degree
Must be a member and in good standing with the South Carolina Bar
Must satisfy Rule 403 requirements
Some overnight travel required
Must have above-average understanding of computers, software and technology (beyond MS-Office and related software)
Position may be required to travel and transport files
Preferred
Must be well organized with a demonstrated ability to work independently
Must be proficient in legal research and writing and have excellent oral advocacy skills
Good computer skills and knowledge of Word
Must be able to transport files to and from court
Position will require some overnight travel
