Responsibilities

Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems
Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes
Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications
Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications
May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures
Lead junior engineers with engineering services and troubleshooting for Hull Treatment manufacture and installations at NNS and off-site
Regularly communicates with Internal and External customers (Electric Boat, Navy and Suppliers) via email, phone and in person meetings
Navigates a production environment and occasionally supports off-shift and/or weekend duties, travel for short periods within the US
Submits to, obtains and maintains a DOD secret security clearance

Required

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

Preferred

Incumbent will be assertive and seek an Engineering position divided equally between office and shop and production environments
Shipbuilding experience in hull treatments preferred
Ability to communicate successfully with internal and external customers and Suppliers
MS Office Suite computer skills are required, with AutoCAD
