Civil Engineer I, II, III - Continuous Recruitment

The City of Chesapeake is seeking Civil Engineers I, II, and III for continuous recruitment to build a qualified applicant pool for future engineering vacancies. The roles provide professional engineering support, contributing to the planning, design, review, and implementation of engineering projects while serving as a technical resource for staff, contractors, and the public.

Responsibilities

Research and analyze engineering data to prepare and update plans, reports, and correspondence
Review and design plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards for public works, utilities, street lighting, water and wastewater systems, and traffic engineering projects
Perform essential engineering functions including site inspections, cost estimating, and monitoring project progress
Prepare, evaluate, approve, and maintain engineering documentation such as specifications, invoices, proposals, grant applications, and permits
Coordinate project implementation through collaboration with internal staff, contractors, consultants, and external agencies
Respond to inquiries and resolve concerns from contractors, City staff, the public, and partner organizations
Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, seminars, and conferences to support continuous professional development
Perform related duties as assigned, including training or supervising subordinate staff when appropriate

Required

Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field
Engineer I: No experience required for applicants who possess a bachelor's degree; non-degreed applicants must have two years of experience in addition to the degree equivalency
Engineer II: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience
Engineer III: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of five years of related, full-time equivalent experience
Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards
A Professional Engineer (PE) license is required to qualify for Engineer III
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies
