Responsibilities

Provides laboratory customer service to include request for add-ons, specimen collection information, phlebotomy requests, result inquiry, etc

Operates, maintains, and repairs clinical laboratory equipment within the scope of training including waived testing, routine preventative maintenance, calibrations, quality control and safety checks

Performs the phlebotomy function to ensure accurate and timely processing of lab test orders

Provides support functions to technologists including the loading and maintaining of instruments, making up of reagents, thawing, pooling, importing, and issuing of blood products, and maintenance and function checks. Keeps appropriate persons informed of instrument problems and resolutions

Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing and transporting specimens

Completes culture setup of microbiology samples and gram stain preparation when staffed in Microbiology department

Performs clerical duties. Also maintains equipment and adequate stock of supplies. Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic and organized manner

Assists in the preparation and processing of bone marrow specimens

Required

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Six (6) months of prior experience as a lab assistant

Ability to effectively relate and communicate with internal and external customers

Basic knowledge of laboratory information systems

Critical thinking skills

Effective communication skills

Decisive judgment

Ability to work with minimal supervision

Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action

Preferred

Certification in Phlebotomy
