Solid Waste Technician

Leon County Government is dedicated to providing safe and efficient solid waste disposal and recycling services. The Solid Waste Technician will assist in ensuring compliance with environmental guidelines and operate various heavy equipment while managing waste and landfill operations.

Responsibilities

Must be familiar with groundwater rules; monitors groundwater systems; collects samples in accordance with regulations; coordinates sampling and reporting
Maintains methane gas well sites. Collects gas samples quarterly. Coordinates gas reporting to meet DEP requirements
Performs annual maintenance of leachate collection system. Keeps leachate clean-outs clear of debris. Ensures continual operation of pump stations. Facilitates 5yr jet pumping of systems
Operates and maintains a variety of heavy equipment such as articulated front-end loader, skid steer, off road dump truck, loader/backhoe, road grader, mechanical sweepers, mechanical vacuum, and track and wheeled excavators
Screens waste for prohibited materials. Assists with storage of tires, yard waste, and mulch. Manages the landfill vegetation and slopes to standards
Provides support for staff positions upon absence, including scale house attendant duties

Required

High school diploma or GED
Two years of job related experience
Class A license
Training and successful completion of an FDEP Waste Screening/Spotter course to be completed upon hire
Knowledge of basic solid waste management operational permit conditions
Knowledge of acceptable and prohibited waste
Knowledge of occupational hazards associated with SWMF operations
Knowledge of components and parts of equipment that require inspection and daily service
Skill in operating a variety of heavy equipment and transport trucks
Skill in operating a variety of heavy mobile and stationary equipment
Ability to read and write
Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Ability to make independent judgments
Ability to read and understand operator's manuals, policies and procedures
Ability to coordinate hands and eyes while performing multiple functions at once
Ability to pay close attention to details
