Transportation Engineer I, II, or III- Central Design / Abilene
The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking Transportation Engineers I, II, or III to perform engineering work in various functional areas including planning, project development, and construction. The role involves ensuring compliance with laws and guidelines while collaborating with governmental officials and private entities to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Assists Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and/or procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectives
Assists project managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines
Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation
Assists with the development of design and project development reports, surveys and correspondence
Coordinates phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with districts, divisions, Administration, the FHWA, contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers and local entities
Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans
Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support
Interprets maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies
Interprets manuals and required guidelines for traffic operations
Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff
Makes presentations and represents TxDOT
May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of transportation
Assists in developing and/or monitoring budgets
Develops design and project development reports, surveys and correspondence
Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts
Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies
Trains engineering staff
Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets
Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for complex transportation projects
Assesses and reports actual project progress versus planned progress to determine trends and variances for complex projects
Assists Project Managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines for complex projects
Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts
Performs advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies
Performs complex hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of structures over waterways and summarizes the analysis in report form
Qualification
Required
4 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience for Transportation Engineer I
5 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience for Transportation Engineer II
6 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience for Transportation Engineer III
Valid driver's license
Licensed Prof Engineer
Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States must meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment
Statistical analysis methodologies and reporting procedures
Government programs and operations affecting highway and transportation development
Hydrologic and hydraulic engineering principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles
Industry guidelines, specifications and codes in the production and use of technical plans for the development and delivery of products and services
Highway construction design applications
Standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures
Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
Construction engineering policies and procedures
Construction phasing and sequencing
Environmental engineering as it relates to transportation
Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Geometric design relationships to traffic operations, maintenance and construction for Transportation Engineer III
