Mechanical Engineer - Engineering & Services, Facilities & Services
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to utilize their mechanical and plumbing design expertise for campus building projects. Responsibilities
Assist with project planning and program analysis phase for new construction and renovation projects to assist in the development of detailed technical scopes
Provide analysis of existing mechanical systems of campus buildings for condition assessment, operating capacity, functionality, compatibility with associated systems and use of spaces served under the supervision of licensed professional engineer
Establish, update, and meet project schedules. Note significant milestones and deadlines, potential construction conflicts, sequencing and phasing concerns and building/site accessibility. Estimate hours and duration required for tasks of self, technicians, and others involved in development of design, construction administration and project close-out
Manage work assignments, establish project priorities, and resolve design issues
Confer with Management Architects, Management Engineers, and Associate Director regarding resource needs and schedules
Develop weekly forecast of planned work and provide periodic project status reports
Update the design teammates and client routinely and upon changes in scope, schedule, budget, or status
Compare and incorporate results of previous projects and develop schedule and resource allocations required to meet needs of project and client
Provide analysis of existing HVAC, Fire Protection and Plumbing systems of campus buildings for condition assessment, operating capacity, functionality, compatibility with associated systems and use of spaces served
Provide troubleshooting expertise for existing HVAC, fire protection, and plumbing systems that are not functioning properly to identify problems, determine appropriate resolution, and provide recommended corrective work in project program analysis format with clear definition of scope and probable costs
Provide detailed design documents (drawings and specifications) for construction projects for remodeling, renovation, repair, replacement, or new work. This includes all necessary engineering analysis, design and layout of HVAC, fire protection, plumbing systems, development of control sequences, points lists, schematics, and associated building automation control systems integration
Prepare and present reports, programs, displays, or drawings to management or staff as assigned
Provide detailed engineering analysis of Building HVAC Load and System Simulations using Trane Trace700, Carrier HAP, or other suitable software
Provide detailed review of projects designed by outside professional services consultants (PSC’s) and in-house designers. Prepare written review comments for items not compliant with code or University Facilities Standards and for items not compatible, coordinated or acceptable for the proposed use. . May participate in formal or informal discussions concerning these comments
Provide assessment / analysis of existing mechanical, plumbing, and fire suppression systems of campus buildings for mechanical/plumbing operations, capacity, functionality, compatibility with associated systems and use of spaces served
Provide assessment of new technologies, equipment, and systems for mechanical & plumbing building elements and associated equipment in order to evaluate applicability and value to campus projects
Upon request, provide technical review & opinion on variance approval request forms submitted on projects
Utilize software and information resources available to the F&S Division. This includes the Microsoft Office (Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.), AutoCAD, Bluebeam, AiM, the my.fs.illinois.edu Portal, SharePoint, and internet offerings
Provide review of HVAC construction submittals and testing verification on in-house designed projects and other projects as requested
Attend construction progress meetings as needed or by request
Provide technical support and on-site inspections as requested for the Commissioning & Inspection Group
Assist Lead Inspector and occupant with technical issues in-house designed projects during the warranty or post construction phase
Provide and/or attend training for professional development, technical topics, and team-building
Provide assessment of new technologies, equipment and systems for related HVAC, Fire Protection and Plumbing equipment to evaluate applicability to our projects and UIUC Facilities Standards
Prepare and present training sessions for staff for various topics as assigned
Maintain knowledge in current building codes, University Facilities Standards, State and Federal regulations, and restoration standards, energy codes needed to adequately meet the needs of the Engineering Services Department
Provide technical support to F&S Crafts and Trades for equipment selection, troubleshooting of building elements and system problems, development of preventive maintenance needs and answer technical questions
Provide technical support to Commissioning and Inspection group including shop drawing review, contract document interpretations, codes and standards interpretations, testing procedures and start-up
Provide technical engineering consultation to other Facilities & Services units and campus units
Provide Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Suppression expertise in support of Capital Programs/Deferred Maintenance, Engineering Services, Construction Services, Utilities and Engineering Services, Building Maintenance & Grounds, and other F&S Departments as well as campus units
Assist Capital Programs Planners and/or Project Managers in the preparation of project descriptions, preliminary budget and applicable scope of professional services required for each project as requested. Evaluate types of Feasibility Studies required to appropriately meet institutional requirements
Participate in the process for the selection of Professional Services Consultants, as assigned
Participate in focus groups, F&S and campus committees, and initiatives as assigned
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, faculty, staff, administration, professional consultants, and contractors
Provide support in the collaboration, development, and maintenance of the University Facilities Standards
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution
Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois
In-depth (five (5) years minimum) progressively responsible administrative experience in engineering design of HVAC
Demonstrated knowledge & experience of building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and/or building automation and/or control systems
Preferred
Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution
Seven (7) or more years of extensive design experience with large HVAC Central Systems
Four (4) or more years of design experience with Plumbing, and Fire Suppression Systems and building automation systems with increasing responsibility of project development and management
CEM, CEFP, LEED or additional certification in engineering, energy or facility management
Experience using mechanical and plumbing equipment selection software
Experience in Siemens and Schneider Electric I/A Building Automation Control Systems
Thorough knowledge of applicable building codes, standards, and regulations, including the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Energy Conservation Code, and other applicable codes and standards
Thorough knowledge of air-side and complex energy recovery systems
Thorough knowledge of systems modeling and optimum system selection
Experience in energy modeling
Knowledge of laboratory HVAC design
Knowledge of laboratory gas design, laboratory piping and plumbing design, pneumatics, and fuel gas system design
Knowledge of applicable higher education standards, including University Facilities Standards
Solid trouble shooting skills for performance of building systems
Knowledge of building systems, including architectural, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, and building automation and control systems
Thorough knowledge of CEM, CEFP, LEED, or additional certification programs in engineering, energy, or facility management
Moderate working skills with AutoCAD
Solid knowledge and Microsoft Office and Adobe products
Solid verbal and written communication skills
Solid technical writing ability
