Senior Accountant
Great Plains SPCA is the highest rated shelter in the Kansas City area, dedicated to serving 6,800 animals annually. They are seeking a Senior Accountant who will manage complex financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance while ensuring accuracy under pressure and supporting mission-critical operations.
Responsibilities
Preparing and reviewing financial statements and monthly reports
Managing general ledger accounts, journal entries, and reconciliations
Ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations
Tracking grants, donations, and restricted funds
Assisting with budgeting and forecasting
Supporting leadership with financial analysis and reporting
Perform any other finance-related tasks as required by the finance department
Process all mail, bank, credit card, and other financial transactions
Assist with month-end, year-end tasks and other financial duties
Assist with retail system tracking, reporting and maintenance
Process invoices and payments
Monitor and categorize company expenses, ensuring all are recorded in compliance with company policies
Input financial data into accounting software and spreadsheets, ensuring accuracy and completeness
Help prepare and organize financial documentation for internal and external audits
Act as a liaison with internal departments to gather financial information and provide assistance with financial inquiries
All other shelter duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Possess a valid driver's license
BA Accounting
4-5 years accounting experience
Familiar with GAAP and strong understanding of accounting principles
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to work with financial data and manage sensitive information
Organized, proactive and disciplined
Advanced Excel skills
Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
Demonstrated good decision-making and judgement skills, and ability to work independently
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Self-starter with strong work ethic and resourceful approach
Comfortable working in an ever changing fast paced animal focused environment, alongside pets in your office
Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
Maturity, good judgment, professionalism, and ability to work as a team
Ability to remain calm and empathetic in stressful situations
Compassion and empathy for animals and humans
Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, stooping, carrying, and reaching
Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 100 lbs
Lift 50 lbs. to waist height
Preferred
