Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller will support the Controller and CFO by overseeing accounting operations, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, while also leading the accounting team and maintaining internal controls.

Responsibilities

Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Government Accounting Standards (GASB) when applicable
Handle general ledger reconciliations, analyze balance sheet accounts, and monitor cash flow and treasury operations
Provide comprehensive financial updates to senior managers by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting appropriate data points
Guide financial decisions by applying company policies and procedures to current economic landscape
Develop, implement, and maintain financial controls and guidelines in collaboration with senior financial leadership and internal and external stakeholders
Achieve budgeting goals with proper scheduling, analysis, and corrective actions
Help develop and support short and long-term operational strategies
Maintain internal safeguards for revenue receipts, costs, and team and organizational budgets and actual expenditures
Establish (in coordination with Controller and CFO) financial and operating benchmarks, budgets, program monitoring, and reporting standards on biweekly, monthly, and annual basis
Coordinate with external auditors during financial and operational audits and support tax compliance and reporting requirements
Manage day-to-day accounting functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing and fixed asset tracking
Implement consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all programs, adhering to national and local legal standards while remaining knowledgeable of proposed legislation
Develop and enforce internal controls to maximize protection of company assets, policies, procedures, and workflows
Oversee and support accounting team with dynamic leadership that creates an environment of trust and productivity
Supervise, train, and evaluate accounting staff, set goals, assign tasks and coach team members to achieve performance targets
Provide ongoing guidance on accounting procedures and the effective use of financial systems, maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance
Oversee daily work assignments, workload balancing and performance feedback
Develop team capabilities, technical skills and organizational effectiveness
Support onboarding, training and career development to the accounting team
Foster collaboration with Operations, IT, Sales, Manufacturing and Retail teams

Required

Bachelor's degree Accounting, Finance, or related field
Six or more years of experience as a senior-level accounting or finance manager
Experience in mid-sized to large organizations, ideally with multi-entity or multi-location environments
Understanding of US GAAP and solid knowledge of financial reporting best practices
Strong communications skills, leadership capability, and desire for organizational visibility
Experience in and high-level understanding of financial, accounting and inventory management software systems
Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and sound ethical judgement
Exceptional computer skills to include being proficient in Microsoft Office and able to quickly learn new financial systems

Preferred

Professional certification, such as CPA (certified public accountant) or CA (chartered accountant) preferred, support available for candidates actively pursuing certification
MBA with Accounting emphasis
Meaningful and high-level accounting experience in manufacturing and/or transportation industry
Experience in private sector preferred
