Director of Finance
Liberty in North Korea is seeking a Director of Finance to ensure the organization’s financial integrity and long-term sustainability. This role will oversee all financial functions, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance, while providing strategic direction to maximize the organization’s impact.
Responsibilities
Oversee all day-to-day accounting and finance functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll accounting, expense reporting, bank account reconciliation, and cash management
Ensure accounting periods (monthly, quarterly, and annually) are closed in a timely and accurate manner, so that financial statements can be prepared and distributed across the organization, including to the Board of Directors
Lead the organization’s annual and multi-year budgeting process, working closely with the Executive Leadership Team and individual budget managers in the organization to ensure that resource allocation aligns with short and long-term objectives set by the Chief Executive Officer
Oversee the annual audit process as well as the organization’s federal (Form 990) and state (Form 199, RRF-1, etc.) tax filings, serving as the primary liaison to the external audit and accounting firm
Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and other regulatory reporting requirements
Continue to strengthen and evolve internal controls as the organization grows, constantly evaluating and recommending improvements to financial systems and processes
Work closely with the development (fundraising) team to maintain accurate tracking and reporting on restricted donations and grants, providing financial reports to donors and funders as needed
Manage the relationships between the organization and all external finance and banking partners, including traditional banks, payment gateways, credit card providers, and auditors
Develop monthly, quarterly, and annual forecasts, including multi-scenario models
Create and maintain a rolling cash flow forecast
Develop and monitor reports and dashboards that measure and give a deep understanding of the financial health of the organization
Analyze trends and variances, providing strategic insights to the Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors
Partner with the CEO and other members of the executive team to evaluate financial risks, opportunities, and long-term sustainability
Support long-term strategic planning, organizational growth, and new initiatives through financial modeling and analyses
Develop multi-year financial models aligned with organizational strategy and fundraising priorities
Partner with the Director of Development to align fundraising strategy, goals, and progress with the organization’s financial sustainability
Serve as the primary liaison between the organization and external legal counsel
Oversee risk management and mitigation for the organization, working with external brokers to ensure proper insurance coverage is in place
Partner with HR and offer financial input on compensation, benefits, and other operational matters
Supervise and support the Accounting and Operations Manager (and any future accounting and finance staff members, as the department grows)
Serve as staff lead for the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors; prepare materials and present financial insights, trends, and recommendations to the committee and our Board of Directors
Train and support non-finance staff in budgeting, expense processes, financial literacy, and compliance
Build a collaborative, mission-aligned finance culture centered on accuracy, accountability, and clarity
Qualification
Required
A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in financial management, reporting and accounting
At least 2 years of supervisory experience managing accounting staff
Strong technical accounting skills, including hands-on experience with GAAP
Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling
Ability to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights for the executive leadership team and the board of directors
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software (we use NetSuite)
Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills
Highly organized with a proactive, ownership-driven work style
Delivers results and answers on time, with the judgment to know when the answers need to be perfect versus good-enough for the exercise at hand
Must be authorized to work in the States
Preferred
MBA, CPA or similar credential
Experience managing external audits
Experience leading organization-wide system implementations
Experience growing a nonprofit from ~$3M to ~$10M+
Knowledge of grants accounting and donor reporting
International accounting familiarity / willingness to learn
Prior work (professionally or on a volunteer basis involving accounting) with a non-profit
