Senior Data Analyst – Department of Public Health and Environment

Responsibilities

Serve as the primary data partner for the Office of the Medical Examiner (OME) and collaborates on department-wide overdose prevention programs by leading the collection, integration, and interpretation of data from OME systems, CDPHE, and national sources to identify emerging public health trends and inform strategic interventions
Act as the subject matter expert (SME) and manage case reporting for the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS), the Suicide Investigation Form, and Office of the Medical Examiner (OME) data
Lead the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data from multiple sources—including OME systems, CDPHE, and national databases—to identify trends of public health concerns
Monitor emerging threats, including Fentanyl Early Warning, novel psychoactive substances, violence and injury, and provide timely insights to local and national partners
Design and maintain interactive dashboards and visualizations on mortality to communicate complex data in accessible ways
Conduct advanced statistical analyses, predictive modeling, and data linkages to support policy development, forecasting, operational planning, and collaborative research
Present findings and updates to leadership bodies, including the Denver Opioid Abatement Council, elected officials, public agencies, and community groups to inform prevention strategies and funding decisions
Respond to ad hoc mortality-related data requests from city leadership, media, nonprofits, and community organizations and support CORA (Colorado Open Records Act) requests and ensure timely, accurate data delivery
Lead DDPHE’s internal data group to align analytics efforts and promote cross-program collaboration
Serve as the department lead for centralizing data assets and improving access, integration, and governance
Manage relevant data use agreements and ensure compliance with data privacy and sharing protocols
Oversee the team’s GitHub repositories, ensuring proper version control, documentation, and collaboration standards for shared data tools and code
Present findings to internal leadership, elected officials, public agencies, and community groups
Write reports, newsletters, and articles to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences

Required

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, or other related field
Three (3) years of data analytics experience
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education
Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements

Preferred

Bachelor's or Master's degree in a data-related field (Biostatistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, etc.) or public health-related field with additional study or work experience in data science or analytics
The ability to work with and analyze large data sets, including writing queries, cleaning, and validating data, conducting analyses, and creating visualizations to report your findings
Experience utilizing Microsoft PowerBI, Tableau or other analytics/visualization tools to build data visualization dashboards for operational and public reporting
Experience with open-source programming languages and tools used for data engineering and analysis (SQL, DAX or M, Python, R/R Studio, etc.)
Familiarity with qualitative methods and experience using qualitative analysis software tools (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti, MAXQDA, Dedoose) for coding, data organization, and analysis
Familiarity with key public health datasets (e.g., BRFSS, ACS, CDC WONDER, state and local surveillance systems), including understanding their structure, variables, and appropriate applications for public health analysis
Strong time management, project management, and collaboration skills, including the ability to juggle multiple projects, work with a team, and deliver on a deadline with support from a supervisor or lead analyst
Strong communication skills, including the ability to present analytical findings in a concise and engaging way, written or in person, especially to audiences who may have a range of comfort levels with data and analysis
