Engineering Equipment Operator

Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR) is seeking an Engineering Equipment Operator to support the NAVFAC MIDLANT Qualified Recycling Program. The role involves operating heavy equipment like front end loaders and forklifts to manage recycling operations and ensure safety compliance while performing various related duties.

Responsibilities

Loads, unloads, or relocates materials and heavy bulky items from trucks and other conveyances utilizing heavy engineering equipment
Majority of work will be operating a 2.7 cubic yard articulating bucket front end loader in and around our recycling facilities
Other duties will include but not be limited to, operating a 10,000 lb. forklift, driving a 10 ton stake body truck and¾ ton pick-up truck to various destinations as required providing pick-up and delivery of recyclable materials
Assists in the manual sorting and separation of refuse from various types of scrap metals and other recyclable materials
Performs domestic cleaning functions on scrap metal processing and recyclable materials
Loads and unloads vehicles as required ensuring cargo is properly loaded, distributed for even weight, secured properly, makes sure vehicle is not loaded beyond capacity and does so following all safety precautions
Signs for and obtains receipts for cargo and completed trip tickets
Keeps records or logs and reports any defects in vehicle operations, accidents, or traffic violations
Operation of the 2.7 cubic yard articulating bucket Front End Loader, 10,000 lb. forklift and other scrap metal handling equipment is accomplished on sandy/gravel terrain, pavement, natural surface, metals sorting yards and in extremely hot and cold weather, frequently in the rain and snow, often under short daily deadlines
Performs operational inspections of vehicles for loose parts, damages or worn tired, proper oil levels, battery condition, lights and similar items and reports them
Check presence and usability of assigned equipment, such as tools and fire extinguishers
Cleans assigned vehicles and performs other recycling related duties as assigned

Required

Must pass all applicable records and background check
Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment
Must possess a valid driver's license
Must be able to obtain and maintain Navy operator's license for Heavy Construction Equipment and Forklift within 30 days of employment
Employee will need to pass standard Navy Medical stressor exams to qualify for the required Navy licenses
Starting May 7, 2025, non-affiliated individuals requesting access will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification to access CNRMA Installations
Must have experience in operating a 2.7 cubic yard bucket Front End Loader tractor or equivalent size
Skill and knowledge of governing rules, regulations and maintenance requirements sufficient to operate the heavy construction equipment and forklift
Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision
Ability to comply with established safety, environmental and equipment use requirements
Must be able to operate tractor with attachment of the front end loader; requires good hand, foot and eye coordination to control precise movements of tractor and the attachment in lifting and positioning heavy objects
Must be able to operate large construction type front end loader to perform loading of dump trucks, etc., requires skill and ability to operate and position both equipment and load (including simultaneous positioning of equipment and bucket)
Must have skill and ability to maintain the extension of attachment of the tractor and extension of the bucket of the front end loader in such a manner to keep the equipment center of gravity within safe operating limits considering load and its effect on total vehicle to prevent tipping or similar accidents

Preferred

Some experience preferred in the operation of a forklift and a Skid Steer
Knowledge of types of scrap metals and recycling processes is preferred
