Compost Site Manager & Hauler
Worm Return is a woman-owned, socially responsible organic material diversion company providing composting services to the City of Pittsburgh and beyond. The Compost Site Manager & Hauler role supports daily hauling operations and site management, focusing on diverting food waste and producing compost while engaging the community in environmental justice work.
Responsibilities
Replace full buckets with clean buckets at each stop along the route across Pittsburgh and outlying areas
Incorporate the contents of the buckets into compost piles
Coordinate with coworkers to schedule activities, which may change throughout the day
Rinse buckets and dispose of the rinse water according to warehouse procedures
Sort all recyclable material collected during your route
Prepare products for delivery before your route
Drive sprinter van and large minivan safely and responsibly
Wash and handle collection buckets
Maintain minor warehouse upkeep
Organize storage locations for pallets, screens, fasteners, tools, and materials
Sort recyclables according to established protocols
Manage 3-5 open drop-off days per week for community food scrap collection
Maintain and operate 10+ compost bins according to specifications (includes aerated static thermophilic bins)
Build and install new compost bins as needed (4 bins during grant period)
Monitor compost bin and windrow temperatures
Operate sifter and process finished compost
Manage on-site woodchip stockpile; coordinate replenishment needs
Maintain worm hotel operations
Ensure site safety, signage, wayfinding, and cold-weather operational protocols
Monitor contamination rates (target ≤5%)
Ensure overall site cleanliness and organization
Use proprietary Worm Return software to record information and plan daily activities
Track and report monthly metrics for Homewood site: food scraps diverted, compost produced, bins constructed
Maintain detailed operational records and attendance logs
Contact management team through proper channels when difficulties arise
Coordinate with involveMINT Inc. on grant deliverables and timeline benchmarks
Prepare periodic operations reports
Work with community partners including gardens, schools, and local organizations
Coordinate vendor redemption pathways for finished compost
Support development of garden/market distribution systems
Collaborate on site infrastructure projects
Qualification
Required
Physical ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds
Able to improvise, be flexible, and adapt to changing circumstances
Able to work independently and follow established protocols
Comfortable driving a sprinter van and a large minivan
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
Strong organizational skills and ability to track multiple metrics
Excellent communication skills for community engagement and volunteer training
Ability to make good judgment calls in dynamic, real-world conditions
Comfort with technology for documentation and reporting via web applications
Commitment to environmental justice and community-based food systems
Preferred
Experience with composting, urban agriculture, or waste management
Experience with thermophilic composting or large-scale food waste diversion
Background in environmental education or community organizing
Familiarity with Pittsburgh neighborhoods, particularly Homewood
Experience with volunteer coordination and training
Knowledge of circular economy principles
Bilingual skills (Spanish or other languages spoken in the community)
Willingness to accommodate the changing needs of the business and coworkers
