Legal Secretary
Peak Performers is partnering with the New York State entity responsible for safeguarding people with disabilities and special needs. They are seeking a Legal Secretary to provide clerical level legal support services, including reviewing legal documents, maintaining electronic records, and acting as a liaison within the Agency.
Employment
Responsibilities
Read, review, and edit legal documents as directed
Review revisions with Administrative Law Judges as needed
Review Exhibit Lists for accuracy and ensure the actual exhibits are stored as required
Prepare, review, and edit content for a variety of communications, including reports, proposals, emails, and websites
Maintain electronic records related to legal proceedings, including by ensuring accurate entries of information in a timely manner
Act as a liaison to other units within the Agency and ensure the Unit is informed about contacts with other units within the Agency
Check emails regularly and take necessary steps to address inquiries, requests for adjournments, attorney representation letters, etc
Update calendars, file correspondence, emails, etc
Answer telephone and general email account as needed
Receive incoming mail and send outgoing mail from the office or from the post office as necessary
Assist the Director of the Administrative Hearings Unit as directed
Assist the Administrative Specialist 1 as requested
Other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Candidates must possess a minimum of an associate degree in legal assistance OR an associate degree and a certificate of completion of a Legal Assistant Certificate Program from an accredited college
Candidates should have a minimum of two years of experience providing complex clerical level legal support services to an attorney OR on contested cases overseen by an attorney
Knowledge of basic legal processes; legal terminology and legal forms; and legal research techniques
Familiarity with reading laws and legal documents, in addition to being comfortable working with other written material
Must understand the importance of, and be able to maintain, confidentiality, including while responding to questions or concerns from the public
