Substation Testing & Relay Technician

Talisman is seeking a Substation Testing & Relay Technician responsible for testing, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of substation protection and control systems. Responsibilities

Perform protective relay testing and commissioning :
Electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relays
SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB, Schweitzer, Basler, Beckwith
Execute primary and secondary injection testing
Test and commission:
HV/MV circuit breakers (timing, contact resistance, insulation)
CTs and PTs (polarity, ratio, excitation)
Transformers and bus systems
Conduct end-to-end relay testing , functional trip checks, and SCADA verification
Perform acceptance, maintenance, and troubleshooting testing per NETA, IEEE, and client standards
Review and interpret:
One-lines, three-lines, wiring diagrams, and protection logic
Support energization, de-energization, and outage activities
Identify mis-operations, wiring issues, or protection gaps and recommend corrective actions
Generate test reports, relay settings documentation, and commissioning records
Maintain compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NERC, and company safety policies

Required

3+ years of experience in substation testing and relay protection
Hands-on experience with HV/MV substations (distribution and transmission)
Strong understanding of protective relay schemes: Overcurrent, differential, distance, breaker failure, bus protection
Experience with relay test equipment: Omicron, Doble, Megger, ISA, Vanguard
Ability to work independently in energized substation environments
Willingness to travel and work extended hours during outages
Valid driver's license

Preferred

NETA Level I, II, III, or IV certification
Experience with utility, EPC, or renewable-energy substations
Familiarity with SCADA, RTUs, and IEC 61850
Electrical journeyman license or technical degree
Strong report writing and client-facing communication skills
