The State of Maryland is seeking an Assistant Ombudsman for Corrections to provide independent oversight of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The role involves advising on significant issues related to correctional oversight, maintaining compliance with policies, and ensuring effective communication.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

The Assistant Ombudsman for Corrections will assume the responsibility of correctional oversight within DPSCS facilities
Responsible for advising the Deputy Correctional Ombudsman or designee on all significant issues relating to Correctional oversight; initiates changes and improvements to ensure the most effective delivery
Responsible for timely reporting on DPSCS facility conditions in consultation with Deputy Correctional Ombudsmen or designee
Responsible for maintaining compliance with OCO policies and procedures to ensure the timely delivery of services on a daily and long-range basis
Maintain timely and effective communication

Required

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate
Six years of administrative staff or professional work
Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience
Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience
Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for five years of the required experience
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience
Employees assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland

Preferred

Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or Master's degree in a relevant field such as criminal justice, public administration, therapeutic counseling, social work, or other relevant field
Experience working with diverse populations, including juvenile or incarcerated individuals, their families, and advocacy groups
Experience conducting audits, investigations, or oversight activities within a juvenile, correctional or similar setting
Experience in conflict resolution and mediation
Familiarity with Maryland's Juvenile or correctional system and relevant stakeholders
Experience working with governmental bodies and legislative processes
Individuals with relevant lived experience welcomed to apply
