Cathodic Protection Technician

Responsibilities

Collects, compiles, and analyzes data from corrosion prevention test stations to determine the need for maintenance, repair, and/or replacement
Diagnoses, troubleshoots, adjusts, and repairs corrosion prevention and testing devices, equipment, and systems
Applies relevant principles and techniques to evaluate and solve corrosion problems of varying difficulty
Reviews and evaluates corrosion control parameters of water pipelines, storage tanks, reservoirs, flow control facilities, pump stations, and treatment plant facilities
Performs pipeline condition assessments and service life analysis; and participates in the interior inspection of transmission and distribution system pipelines
Installs, maintains, and inspects corrosion prevention systems, which provide cathodic protection and protective coatings for water pipelines, storage tanks, reservoirs, flow control facilities, pump stations, and treatment plant facilities
Coordinates daily tasks of temporary staff as needed to execute corrosion prevention systems
Utilizes and maintains information related to cathodic protection in the District’s geographic information system (GIS), enterprise asset management system (EAM), corrosion project databases, word processing, and spreadsheet applications to retain complete records and files
Prepares clear, concise, and accurate technical reports, and correspondence
In conjunction with other departments, installs and monitors District remote monitoring leak detection devices and software, satellite leak detection efforts, and records information into the GIS system
Serves as liaison for corrosion related projects and assists with the preparation of bids and the selection of contractors to support the District’s Cathodic Protection Program
Trains, instructs and advises other District personnel in corrosion prevention methods, techniques, and practices
Performs all related duties as assigned

Required

High School diploma or equivalent is required, supplemented by college course work or specialized training related to water science, including corrosion control programs
One year of experience in the administration, testing, and inspection of corrosion control devices or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
Valid California driver's license and proof of insurability and Standard First Aid and CPR certifications are required
State of California Water Distribution Operator D3 certification is required
Water Treatment Operator T1 certification is required
A Water Treatment Operator T2 certification is required within two years of appointment
The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) Cathodic Protection Tester CP1 certification is required within two years of appointment
The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Electrical Safety Class 70E is required within six months of appointment
Knowledge of the operation, services, and activities of a corrosion control program to include practices, principles and techniques of corrosion control
Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations regarding the installation and testing of corrosion control devices
Knowledge of principles of electricity as applied to cathodic protection systems and devices
Knowledge of general safety practices
Knowledge of office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers
Ability to use spreadsheet and database software applications such as geographic information systems (GIS) and enterprise asset management systems (EAM)
Knowledge of applicable water supply and related distribution equipment and facilities
Knowledge of principles and practices of customer service

Preferred

The NACE Cathodic Protection Technician CP2 certification is desirable
