Solutions Journalism Network (SJN) is focused on promoting solutions journalism to enhance the quality of news reporting. The consultant will support the adoption of solutions journalism in Brazil by designing workshops, fostering partnerships, and developing audience engagement strategies with a focus on climate change impacts in the region.

Responsibilities

The consultant is expected to develop relationships in the media industry to secure the spread of solutions journalism on the topic of climate, locally. They are responsible for:
Co-Hosting Train-theTrainers (ToTs) in collaboration with the Director of Partnerships & Fellowships and other SJN staff for journalists, newsrooms, and/or partners in Brazil. This will require the consultant to go through ToT training, themselves
Work with SJN’s partners and SJN’s team to create relevant training resources for the regional network, including climate solutions journalism training, editing sessions and coaching; train-the-trainers; impact tracking and audience engagement strategies. Those resources shall be made available in local languages as needed
Establish partnerships with regional institutional partners and universities for sustained communities of practice
Provide consultancy on designing/tailoring and leading solutions journalism support programs & trainings locally
Provide support on audience engagement and impact tracking strategies
Foster and build peer networks of learning, opportunities for connection, and communities of practice
Center equity, inclusion & belonging in partnership selection and in the peer networks and in the work the partners are producing. Incorporate learnings from our existing network of partners and trainers in Brazil
Disseminate the stories and best practices from trainers, journalists and newsrooms trained with the network and media industry at large (which may involve travels to conferences)
Attend an Introduction to Solutions Journalism webinarWork with the Solutions Insights Lab team on impact tracking throughout the duration
Work with the Story Tracker team to recommend stories resulting from work with partners

Required

Subject matter expertise: Experience writing and/or editing strong solutions journalism. Knowledge about climate change and its consequences
Evaluation and Improvement: Experience in conducting post-project evaluations to assess effectiveness and gather feedback. This includes analyzing results to inform future project strategies and improve processes
Project management skills: Demonstrated ability to effectively execute projects by creating comprehensive timelines, allocating resources efficiently, and ensuring timely completion of deliverables. You are organized, disciplined and focused. You know how to function effectively with multiple moving parts and keep projects moving forward, including working with project management systems such as Asana and Salesforce. You look beyond assigned tasks, anticipate potential successes or bumps in the road ahead, and possible solutions
Cultural Competency and Empathy: This extends to understanding diverse viewpoints across all program areas
Collaborative and able to adapt: Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including trainers, journalists, newsrooms, and partners, to ensure alignment and effective communication throughout the project lifecycle. You consistently communicate with clarity and transparency and welcome constructive feedback
Strong Networking and Relationship-Building Skills: The ability to cultivate relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including journalists, academics, organizational partners, community leaders, funders, technology experts, and business professionals
Bilingual Proficiency: The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in Portuguese and English

Preferred

Data Literacy and Analytical Skills: the ability to understand and interpret data to inform program strategy, evaluate impact, and identify trends (e.g., audience engagement metrics, program effectiveness data)
Entrepreneurial Mindset / Comfort with Ambiguity: You thrive in dynamic environments where you can identify opportunities, and adapt to changing priorities
Storytelling and Communication: Beyond standard program updates, the ability to articulate the 'why' and 'impact' of the programs in a compelling way to diverse audiences, including funders, participants, and the public
Facilitation and Coaching Skills: The ability to guide group discussions, foster collaboration, and provide constructive feedback to participants. Prior completion of SJN Train the Trainers (ToT) and introduction to Solutions Journalism webinar
