Building/Code Enforcement Inspector

NEOGOV is seeking a Building/Code Enforcement Inspector for the City of South Milwaukee. Responsibilities

Inspect properties for violations of Building, Property Maintenance, and Zoning codes
Assist with review of plans/specifications for new buildings or alterations to existing structures to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances
Assist with issuing permits for occupancy, building, electrical, HVAC and plumbing; maintain inspection and permit records, and compile various reports for the Mayor and Common Council as required
Assist with inspection of construction, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical installations for code compliance
Interpret regulations and codes to ensure compliance with established standards; write and submit ordinance change proposals to the Common Council in accordance with legislation
Enforce (issue Notices, Correction Orders) violations of the City’s Building, Zoning and Property Maintenance codes
Review compliance of orders for erosion control plans
Review compliance with occupancy conditions
Review other nuisance complaints as necessary or as directed
Develop and maintain a systematic program for inspecting and tracking follow-up inspections
Coordinate code enforcement response on City’s citizen complaint software
Prepare and issue notices and orders for substandard properties; interpret legal requirements and recommend compliance procedures to property owners
Re-inspect corrections for compliance
Interact with other departments where and when necessary; act as an advisor to the City Attorney in the preparation of cases regarding code violations in the event compliance cannot be reached
Prepare and maintain accurate reports, records involving all actions; appear before the Board of Appeals as necessary
Maintain courteous and professional attitude in handling of citizens
Maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff and departments
Ability to work irregular or extended hours and attend meetings as required
Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

High school diploma or G.E.D
Possession of or ability to obtain Wisconsin Commercial Building Inspector certification
Possession of or ability to obtain Wisconsin UDC Construction, HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical certification
Possession of a valid Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Operator's License essential
Ability to obtain a nationally recognized Property Maintenance Certification
Effective communication, oral and written – accuracy is essential
Ability to deal effectively and efficiently with the public with tact and discretion
Demonstration of good character as determined through a thorough background investigation
Ability to follow detailed directions, work independently, organize and prioritize work, and make decisions as required
Ability to verify design calculations and perform comparisons in order to ensure code compliance or prosecution for noncompliance
Knowledge of local, state and national building maintenance and zoning codes and standards
Knowledge of buildings trades, construction and related fields, including occupational hazards and safety precautions
Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC standards
Ability to quickly and accurately detect variations from building code and zoning regulations
Basic typing skills and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and Windows
Sound knowledge of business English and spelling and advanced mathematical concepts
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from citizens
Superior interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers and supervisors
Ability to provide truthful and accurate written and verbal communications
Ability to maintain confidentiality on all City matters

Post high school education preferred
Recent practical work experience in construction, maintenance and repair of buildings preferred
