Responsibilities

Assists in analyzing and developing protective relay settings, relay coordination, short circuit, load flow, or impact studies as well as other various protection system studies of transmission, generation and distribution facilities to predict, analyze and verify performance under various operating situations
Assists in preparing protective relay equipment specifications, settings coordination, control / logic schemes for implementation in the field
Reviews system events and faults with other departments or entities to identify protection system issues
Reviews expansion or replacement projects to ensure compatibility with existing and future protection system design
Responds to customer requests regarding facility / load additions that may include protection system analysis, planning, and coordination studies which result in protective system changes
Performs Arc Flash analysis and other protective equipment support for field engineers or personnel
Produces work products that adhere to NERC reliability standards through established processes
Attends applicable seminars, conferences, and training to stay informed and relevant in industry practices
Proficiently analyzes and develops protective relay settings, relay coordination, short circuit, load flow, or impact studies as well as other various protection system studies of transmission, generation and distribution facilities to predict, analyze and verify performance under various operating situations
Proficiently prepares protective relay equipment specifications, settings coordination, control / logic schemes for implementation in the field
Proficiently determines accurate coordination of protective devices with any internal or external entities at points where there is a change in ownership or responsibility
Proficiently determines improvements or appropriate corrective actions following event analysis
Develops and performs maintenance of system modeling and databases for transmission, generation and distribution assets
Performs peer reviews of associate engineer’s work products as assigned by department lead
Research, propose, develop, test, and implement new or improved protective relay scheme design standards using innovative design approaches available to the electrical utility industry
Provide subject matter expert support on best practices and approaches to ensure that proper protection techniques are being utilized and implemented internally as well as externally if external entity facilities are impacting
Acts as a subject matter expert for associated NERC reliability standards by developing process controls and participating in internal compliance adherence processes as well as compliance audits
Maintains engineering proficiency through participating in industry reliability / protection forums or organizations
Provide guidance to fellow engineers on technical matters. Make required decisions based on sound technical judgement
Lead specific technical projects by assigning duties to group members and ensuring work completed meets highest quality
Represent group at internal/external meetings, forums, etc. Share key takeaways and offer suggestions for decisions to be made
Analyze areas for process improvement. Gather stakeholder input and implement improvements by effective communication and follow-ups

Required

Must have the ability to use personal computers and use associated engineering software

Engineer I - Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited engineering program
Engineer II - Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with a focus in Power System Engineering + 2 years of experience in Power System Protective relaying or Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited engineering program + 3 years of experience in Power System Protective relaying
Engineer III - Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with a focus in Power System Engineering + 5 years of experience in Power System Protective relaying or Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited engineering program + 7 years of experience in Power System Protective relaying
Senior Engineer - Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with a focus in Power System Engineering + 8 years of experience in Power System Protective relaying or Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited engineering program + 10 years of experience in Power System Protective relaying

Preferred

Previous knowledge of medium / high voltage power system protective devices
Previous knowledge and use of power system modeling software
Previous knowledge and use of ASPEN OneLiner, CYME, AcSELerator Quickset, SEL SynchroWave Event, SKM, Python or other programming languages
Previous knowledge of relay setting calculations and coordination techniques for medium / high voltage facilities
Previous knowledge of ANSI/IEEE standards relating to high voltage power equipment as well as NERC reliability standards
Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) or more advanced degree with a focus in Power System Engineering
Previous experience implementing or testing medium/high voltage power equipment or associated protection and control equipment
Previous experience in an electrical engineering role with an electric utility
