Responsibilities
Own the performance, scalability, and reliability of production database systems
Design, scale, and maintain high-availability Amazon RDS (MySQL) clusters
Optimize queries, indexes, and schemas to support low-latency workloads at scale
Build and maintain observability for database health, including monitoring, alerting, and performance dashboards
Manage backups, restores, failovers, and disaster recovery processes
Collaborate with engineers to improve data models, migrations, and query patterns
Introduce automation for routine database operations such as patching, scaling, and parameter tuning
Enforce security best practices, including IAM roles, encryption, auditing, and least-privilege access
Partner with product and infrastructure teams to plan for capacity growth and major launches
Qualification
Required
Strong experience managing production relational databases, primarily MySQL
Strong SQL skills with hands-on experience in query optimization and index tuning
Experience with Amazon RDS, including parameter groups, Multi-AZ, read replicas, and Aurora
Solid understanding of database internals, including transaction isolation, locking, and replication
Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform
Experience working with monitoring and observability tools like CloudWatch or Datadog
Strong problem-solving and debugging skills with the ability to deep dive into performance issues
Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
