Responsibilities

Supervises and manages the department’s communication systems, including radios and alerting technologies
Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local communication regulations and best practices
Oversees the maintenance and functionality of all communication equipment and coordinates repairs or upgrades as needed
Develops and implements policies and procedures related to emergency communications to enhance operational effectiveness
Provides training and guidance to personnel on the proper use of communication systems
Serves as the primary liaison between the fire department and other emergency response agencies for communication-related matters
Monitors communication system performance and addresses any issues that may impact emergency response capabilities
Conducts evaluations and recommends improvements for communication procedures and technologies
Assists in budget planning and procurement related to communication equipment and services
Responds to major incidents as necessary to coordinate and manage communication efforts effectively
Repairs, maintains, programs, and installs base station/mobile and portable radios, repeaters, controllers, and radio dispatch consoles
Designs, builds, and updates radio templates and code plugs, and programs code plugs into various types of radio equipment using dedicated vendor programming software
Maintains database of radio equipment inventory and radio parts inventory
Programs, tests, and repairs alphanumeric pagers and paging repeaters and controllers
Installs, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots fire alerting repeaters and controllers at fire stations
Installs, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots simulcast, conventional, and digital mobile radio (DMR) radio systems
Travels to different sites to provide radio communications-related services, including dispatch, tower site locations, and other city facilities
Inspects and maintains city site facilities and external grounds on a monthly basis or as requested
Provides support and access to authorized vendors to all radio facilities
Accepts service and repair requests from customers via Operative IQ and walk-ins
Manages assignments through Operative IQ
Ensures that radio shop computers are operating on the latest versions of radio programming software
Works independently and efficiently on assignments, manages time efficiently, and has excellent oral and written communication and customer service skills
Manages multiple work assignments
Performs related work as assigned

Required

Requires an Associate's degree from an accredited trade, technical, or vocational school, college, or university with major coursework in communications, communications theory and practice, radio communications technology, or a relevant field. (One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.)
Requires knowledge of public safety radio systems, hardware, software, interfaces, and operations
Requires a background or acquired knowledge in Fire Department radio operations. Including paging systems and response apps and software
Possess and maintain proof of eligibility to obtain basic FCIC/NCIC (Florida/National Crime Information Center) certification
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License

Preferred

HAM Radio (Amateur Radio) Operator's license preferred
