Responsibilities
Define the architecture that connects motion control, BLDC and stepper drivers, pumps, valves, heaters, optical modules, sensors, and photonic readout
Design the topology of multiple microcontrollers and the communication buses between them (SPI, UART, RS485, CAN, USB, GPIO triggers)
Create subsystem boundaries, interface specifications, timing diagrams, and state-machine behavior
Ensure system design meets performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost goals
Collaborate closely with electrical, firmware, mechanical, photonics, fluidics, chemistry, and manufacturing teams
Lead architecture reviews and guide critical subsystem decisions
Anticipate edge cases and design the system to behave predictably under all conditions
Maintain a unified vision for how all subsystems interact
Define sensing and feedback loops for motion, temperature, optics, and fluidics
Specify the timing and sequencing of optical reads, mechanical movements, thermal transitions, and fluidic actions
Guide PCB design to ensure alignment with firmware behavior
Evaluate tradeoffs in component selection, power systems, performance, and durability
Define high-level firmware structure, including state machines, scheduling, inter-module communication, safety logic, and calibration modes
Ensure electronics and firmware are developed according to a single cohesive architecture
Support firmware design reviews without requiring day-to-day firmware coding
Define system-level protections, detection mechanisms, and fallback modes
Contribute to system risk analysis while another team member leads regulatory documentation
Build in robustness and predictable behavior for real-world environments
Guide the evolution of the system through early prototypes, verification builds, and mass production
Define requirements for testing, calibration, and manufacturing diagnostics
Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to protect architectural integrity during scale-up
Qualification
Required
Experience architecting complex electromechanical or embedded systems such as consumer electronics, robotics, automation equipment, or scientific instruments
Strong foundation in both electronics design and embedded firmware fundamentals
Ability to define subsystem interfaces, timing behavior, and state-machine logic
Experience with mixed-signal circuits, sensors, motor control, power systems, and multi-MCU architectures
Excellent debugging skills across hardware, firmware, and mechanical systems
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
Authorized to work in the United States and available onsite in Burlington MA
Preferred
Experience with motion systems, fluidics, optical sensing, or complex electromechanical devices
Familiarity with RTOS environments such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr
Experience bringing hardware platforms into mass production
Experience with safety-critical or regulated environments (not required due to team structure)
