Responsibilities

Thorough knowledge of Florida and federal law applicable to various departments and/or divisions within the Clerk’s office
Effective case and time management; able to handle a high-volume caseload
Assigned duties require intense concentration and continuous exposure to unusual pressure in conducting legal analysis
Evaluating problems and isolating key issues while also meeting established deadlines
Some work may require exercising absolute confidentiality. The work is performed under the general direction of the Clerk’s General Counsel
The Clerk’s Assistant General Counsel will evaluate and review adherence to established procedures and attainment of desired goals/objectives and hold the employee accountable for the adherence to professional standards and/or established legal protocols
Commitment to ethical public service and the mission of the Miami-Dade Clerk of the Court and Comptroller’s Office
Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
Ability to analyze complex legal issues and develop effective strategies
Professional demeanor and ability to communicate effectively with courts, agencies, attorneys, staff, and the public
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in handling sensitive information
Prepare pleadings, motions, memoranda, legal briefs, and correspondence
Conduct discovery, including depositions, interrogatories, and requests for production
Argue motions and try cases before judges, juries, and administrative hearing officers
Provide legal opinions and guidance as directed by the General Counsel
Conduct legal research and interpret statutes, rules, case law and constitutional provisions
Respond to public records requests in compliance with Florida’s Sunshine Law (chapter 119, F.S.)
Respond to inquiries from staff, judiciary and/or court personnel, law enforcement, government agencies, and the public as directed
Collaborate with attorneys, paralegals, and other staff in developing and arguing cases
Manage a caseload with minimum supervision while meeting deadlines and litigation requirements
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel)

Required

Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
Seven (7) years legal practice required including civil and/or criminal litigation experience required
Must be a Florida licensed attorney in good standing with The Florida Bar

Familiarity with Florida Statutes, Florida Rules of Court Procedure, Attorney General Opinions and Administrative Rules
Appellate and/or federal practice experience a plus
Proficiency in one or more legal research platforms (Westlaw, LexisNexis, Fastcase)
