Responsibilities
Define the overall mobile technical strategy across iOS or Android, including frameworks, tooling, and best practices. As a domain expert to influence system design across mobile and backend teams to ensure scalable and efficient solutions
Architect and implement secure mobile payment solutions using NFC and EMV Co Standards
Help develop and design the long-term mobile platform vision for both iOS and Android. Establish and evolve the core mobile architecture, design patterns, and engineering standards for both platforms. Ensure consistency, performance, and maintainability by setting precedents for dependency injection, module management, and reactive programming across Android (Kotlin) and iOS (Swift)
Lead architectural and code reviews for key features and platform components across multiple mobile teams. Define and enforce a high bar for engineering quality, performance, and reliability through mentorship and process improvements
Use a deep understanding of mobile systems and strategic goals to resolve architectural disagreements and align teams in a single, coherent direction. Act as a neutral technical voice to facilitate decisions on shared libraries, build systems, or cross-platform code
Lead prototyping of complex mobile solutions, such as new SDK integrations, or performance optimizations, validating their technical feasibility and alignment with the overall product roadmap
Act as the mobile expert in product and design discussions, providing a technical perspective on tradeoffs and risks. Influence product teams to prioritize platform health, accessibility (for both iOS and Android), and technical debt reduction alongside new feature work
Guide the technical planning and execution for major mobile-specific initiatives, such as a full app redesign, a modularization effort, or a large-scale performance overhaul. Directly influence the roadmaps of multiple mobile teams to ensure they are building toward a cohesive architectural vision
Establish department-wide mobile testing strategies, including unit, integration, and UI automation tests (like XCUITest for iOS or Espresso for Android). BrowserStack and Appium experience. Drive adoption of advanced performance monitoring tools and testing practices within the CI/CD pipeline
Mentor other senior engineers on mobile architecture, and design. Lead critical, cross-functional mobile projects from a technical perspective, mobilizing engineers from different teams to achieve a common goal
Stay up to date on the latest Android or iOS tooling and SDKs to proactively identify opportunities for process and efficiency improvements. Champion and lead the development of internal libraries and tooling that improves developer productivity across all mobile teams
Architect and enforce best-in-class mobile security practices, such as code obfuscation, certificate pinning, and secure API integration. Collaborate with security and legal teams to ensure the mobile platform adheres to all data privacy and confidentiality standards (e.g., GDPR, CCPA)
Supporting the company’s commitment to risk management and protecting the integrity and confidentiality of systems and data
Qualification
Required
Education and/or experience typically obtained through a master's/bachelor's degree in computer science or related technical field
Twelve (12) or more years of relevant related experience
Nine or more years of overall professional software engineering experience, with at least five years of native mobile application development (Android and/or iOS). Expertise on both platforms is critical for a senior staff role that influences across an entire mobile organization
Experience with mobile payments and understanding of EMV Co standards as necessary
Deep proficiency in modern mobile development ecosystems: iOS: Mastery of Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, and Combine. Android: Mastery of Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and the Android SDK
Demonstrated experience in shipping and maintaining large-scale, business-critical mobile applications available on the App Store or Google Play
Expert knowledge of mobile application architecture and design patterns (e.g., MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture). A senior staff engineer must set architectural standards for multiple teams
Experience in designing and developing reusable mobile platform components, frameworks, and SDKs that can be leveraged across multiple product teams to enhance scalability, consistency, and maintainability
Experience in the development of scalable, distributed systems is essential, but with a mobile-centric perspective. This includes designing robust APIs and understanding the complexities of mobile-to-backend communication, including offline-first and event-driven architectures (Pub/Sub, Kafka)
Strong working experience with mobile infrastructure and developer tooling, including modern CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Fastlane, Bitrise, GitHub Actions), automated testing, and build/release systems
Working knowledge of AWS cloud infrastructure, particularly as it pertains to mobile services like push notifications, authentication, and backend-as-a-service
Experience with mobile security principles, secure coding, and vulnerability mitigation. A senior staff engineer is accountable for protecting the integrity and confidentiality of systems and user data
Strong ability to influence and lead technical direction within and between multiple engineering teams. This includes mentoring senior level engineers and resolving cross-organizational technical conflicts
Active ownership of the long-term health of mobile platforms, including performance, security, and scalability. A senior staff engineer drives improvements beyond their immediate scope
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to build consensus and persuade both technical and non-technical stakeholders on architectural decisions
Expert knowledge of fundamental software engineering principles: data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, and secure coding practices
Expertise in evaluating and implementing new mobile technologies, libraries, and frameworks to keep the platform modern and competitive
Knowledge of Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) best practices, software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum, etc) and DevOps practices
