Substation Designer Intern - Kiewit Power Engineering (Summer 2026)

Kiewit is a full-service consulting and engineering firm serving the infrastructure and engineering markets. They are seeking a Substation Designer Intern who will work with engineers and designers to develop design documents and drawings for substation or transmission line projects, while also providing drafting support and mentoring less-experienced team members.

Responsibilities

Work with Engineers and Designers to develop the design documents and drawings for Substation or Transmission Line project
Create design/construction drawing package for substation design project including substation general plan, elevation and detail, bill of material, conduit and cable schedule
Provide drafting support for various type of substation project including physical, electrical and protection and control design
Utilize company standards, client standards, and/or Engineering direction to produce new drawings and update existing drawings utilizing AutoCAD, MicroStation or PLS-CADD
Maintain document management system with quality data
Train, develop and mentor the less-experienced design team members
Perform quality control checks and provide feedback to team members

Required

Pursuing Associates, Vocational or Bachelor's degree in Design & Drafting technology, Engineering Technology or Design or a related degree
Basic experience working with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation and have knowledge of the latest computer operating systems
Must be able to conceptualize in a 3D environment
Must be able to communicate through emails and utilize electronic meeting requests
Must have a working knowledge of spreadsheets, databases and PDF software
Must be able to represent Kiewit manner to owners, contractors, vendors and any other contacts outside the Kiewit organization
Regular, reliable attendance
Work productively and meet deadlines timely
Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment
Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies
Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required
