Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain robust data architectures to support clinical data integration, products, and analyses
Collaborate with clinical, product and IT teams to understand data requirements and translate them into effective data models and solutions
Lead data integration efforts from start to finish, through the entire data life cycle (i.e. prototype to production, and data ingestion to product usage and archival) for multiple electronic medical record (EMR) and practice management (PM) systems
Collaborate with the larger team to design, evolve and implement data architecture(s), infrastructure, data collection efforts and improvements to existing scale, processes and approaches
Establish monitoring solutions to prevent outages, to promote timely and accurate data collection, ingestion, processing and analysis
Design architecture for infrastructure changes for highly performant, scalable, maintainable data pipelines; oversee implementation; test and characterize performance before moving to production
Lead a team of integration specialists, developers and database administrators to ensure timely and accurate completion of data integration projects
Write and optimize complex SQL queries using PostgreSQL to extract, transform, and load (ETL) clinical data; mentor team to increase team capacity and skills
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to technical junior colleagues
Conduct code reviews to promote readability, reuse, performance and security; author code as appropriate and needed
Create, manage, and monitor data quality metrics as part of the Clinical Data Quality Program
Use statistics and tools to evaluate data, present to leadership and stakeholders, and identify problems proactively
Ensure the quality and integrity of clinical data, with a particular emphasis on ophthalmology / retina data
Work to ensure proper data quality is maintained across all clinical data systems and that supporting products get the high quality data they need, when they need it
Develop and maintain documentation for data architecture, data flows, and data models
Ensure data products are produced on time with high quality, accuracy and integrity
Support the people who use the data, both internally and externally, via tracing and troubleshooting data issues, implementing resolutions, and promoting data transparency, leveraging AI tools as appropriate
Promote and evolve data transparency
Use service tickets for all work, and ensure work is properly documented; verify and approve the work of the team as needed. Serve as the final approval of moves to production
Ensure database performance such that that data are accessible and available on-time to analysts, products, support personnel, and AI needs
Help orchestrate and prepare datasets for future products or needs, such as AI, data models, visualizations, or other needs
Serve as data owner and data steward for HIPAA protected health information (PHI), and other regulatory requirements, including corporate security and compliance
Stay current with industry trends and best practices in data engineering and data technologies

Required

Degree or equivalent and typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience. Less years required if has relevant Master's or Doctorate qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Health Informatics, or a related field, or minimum of 5 years IT work experience in data
Clinical background and/or demonstrated work experience with healthcare data and workflows; experience with ophthalmology preferred
Collaborative, problem-solving management style where team members are mentored
Minimum of 5 years of experience in data architecture, data engineering, or a similar role
Minimum of 5 years work experience with healthcare terminologies, standards, billing/ claims (e.g., ICD10, CPT, HL7, FHIR); experience with GEMS crosswalk of ICD9 a plus
Minimum of 3 years of experience coding in SQL and Python; must be able to work in Jupyter Notebooks
3 years work experience with scripting in shell environments (Linux, PowerShell, AWS CLI)
Minimum of 3 yrs expertise with PostgreSQL, including partitioning, indexing (full and partial), query optimization, parallelization, connection pools, clustering, etc
Minimum of 3 yrs work experience with data modeling, ETL processes, and data warehousing using AWS cloud platform. Must know S3, Lambda, ECS, CloudWatch and RDS well
2 years work experience with Data Build Tool (DBT), and using direct DB access, APIs, file ingestion, HL7 v. (2.x and 3), FHIR, etc. to access and manage data
Excellent attention to detail; strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and collaboration skills; demonstrated work experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders and mentoring team members

Preferred

Knowledge of additional database systems such as SQL Server, Oracle, and /or Snowflake preferred
Expertise in bidirectional data transactions via APIs using Python, AWS lambda, ECS, etc
Work experience with data visualization and prototyping tools (e.g., Seaborn, Plotly libraries in python, Tableau, etc.)
Knowledge of statistics: fundamental concepts to summarize, analyze, and visualize data, tests of statistical significance, regression, etc
Experience with additional cloud platforms a plus (e.g. Azure, GCP, etc.)
