Responsibilities
Ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates
Ensuring safe, efficient and compliant HVAC System operations
Ensuring effective training and supervision of assigned inmate work crew
Prepares inmates for community reentry by promoting the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission and Vision while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment
Maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals
Enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches, strip searches and shakedowns
Monitors workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems
Initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or 'use of force' techniques
Monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas
Performs inmate counts and transportation
Responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting
Ensures the safe, efficient, compliant and cost effective completion of assigned tasks and projects by performing 'hands on' instructional work alongside inmate crew
Performs design, installation, adjustment, diagnostics, repair and maintenance on new and existing facility HVAC and refrigeration equipment
Provides technical expertise and oversight for Direct Digital Control (DDC) and microprocessor based HVAC control systems
Coordinates logistical support with other trades and shops in order to utilize resources effectively
Monitors progress and quality of work, completes required documentation, and provides assistance to other operational areas of the maintenance department, such as carpentry, concrete, painting, plumbing etc
Ensures safe handling of refrigerants and that all work is compliant with current federal, state and local regulations and testing standards regarding airflow, lighting and sound
Provides work lead duties for assigned inmate workers
Promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values
Trains and instructs inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure safe and effective completion of tasks
Stresses safe work practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff and inmates
Exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity and ethical behavior
Participates in the interview and hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on work crews and training needs are met
Trains inmate workers in all aspects of HVAC operations ( i.e. correct methods, tool use and care, reading blueprints, performing specific trades, planning a project)
Monitors project progress, inspects work and ensures timely completion of tasks
Performs inmate evaluations, tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances according to agency policy
Reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community re-entry
This position is subject to facility call backs, working additional hours/shifts and weekends in order to maintain safe and secure operations
Working outside during inclement weather
Working in close proximity to industrial equipment and in high, tight and confined spaces
Qualification
Required
Possession of EPA 608 Certification (Type I, II, III or Universal Certification)
Four (4) years of employment experience in light building construction and/or performing preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance in residential or commercial facilities, utilizing a variety of trades such as carpentry, plumbing and/or electrical; At least one (1) of the four (4) years must include installation, repair and maintenance of building/facility HVAC and refrigeration systems
Strong work ethic, integrity and dependability
Sound judgment and decision making skills
Proficiency in facility mechanical and HVAC systems, refrigerants, direct digital controls, electrical controls, pneumatic controls, actuated dampers, natural gas and steam systems with the ability to design, install, repair and maintain new and existing systems, utilizing relevant equipment and tools safely and effectively
Ability to read blueprints and plan & implement projects from start to finish
Ability to effectively communicate, while working with individual and groups of inmates, providing daily instruction and monitoring, in a highly regulated environment with firm deadlines and mandatory reporting and record keeping regulations
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively cooperate with other staff members and inspire teamwork
Supervisory/Work Lead Skills - ability to motivate inmates to work together to accomplish tasks
Knowledge of and ability to maintain safety and security, while supervising inmate work crew, responding to work orders, monitoring project progress
Willingness and ability to respond to emergency situations involving inmates (such as fights, fires and escapes) or HVAC mechanical issues
Willingness and ability to support the CDOC mission of preparing inmates for successful community re-entry
Willingness and ability to use physical force to control a situation
Willingness and ability to climb stairs and ladders and work in high, tight and confined spaces while in close proximity to industrial equipment
Willingness and ability to work outside during inclement weather
Self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations
Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift
Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high-stakes interaction
Ability to read and comprehend the English language

Must be 21 years of age
Possess a valid driver's license
Possess a high school diploma or GED
Have NO felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609
Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States to be appointed to this position
Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics
Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations
Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner
Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders
Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments
Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
Willing and able to travel
Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule
TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire
Successful completion of a background investigation is required
