Business Development Manager, Digital and Creative Works
NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the nation's top-ranked medical schools, and they are seeking a Business Development Manager for their Technology Opportunities & Ventures unit. This role focuses on the commercialization of non-patentable intellectual property and involves engaging with researchers, negotiating agreements, and managing relationships with commercial partners.

Responsibilities
Engage with Researchers: Meet with researchers to understand their work, inform them about intellectual property considerations, and encourage invention disclosures
Communication and Relationships: Demonstrate excellent cooperation, collaboration, and communication with all NYULH employees. Communicate directly with Principal Investigators (PIs) and other community members and coordinate the delivery of results to external collaborators. Ensure accurate, clear, and confidential communication to respond appropriately, address inquiries, and relay necessary information effectively
Investor Outreach: Conduct outreach to venture capital firms, investor groups, and entrepreneurs, maintaining awareness of investment trends. Provide guidance to interns developing business plans for NYU technologies and/or create business plans for portfolio assets as appropriate
Monitoring and Compliance: Monitor signed agreements with companies to stay informed of changes in company focus, personnel, or resources, and the status of ongoing research, product development, and protection of follow-on innovations. Maintain long-term relationships, ensure compliance with agreements, and identify when amendments are necessary
Negotiation of Agreements: Negotiate license, research, and supporting agreements with companies and other relevant parties in consultation with the innovator/PI, Senior Director of Physical Sciences Technology Transfer, and the Executive Director
Responsibilities include negotiating key terms, drafting agreements from approved templates, and finalizing the agreements
Maintain long-term relationships with industry partners and other stakeholders, seek consensus with faculty on licensing and business strategies, and use clear language to avoid misunderstandings. Aim for mutually beneficial terms that adhere to University policies while ensuring attractive returns for both parties
Research and Development Interests: Research and assess companies active research and development interests. Schedule meetings with company representatives and attend conferences to network with personnel responsible for technology licensing and business development in support of the innovation portfolio
Identify Commercial Partners: Identify potential commercial partners for licensing NYU innovations or funding research. Reach out to key decision-makers within these entities to market NYU innovations and research. Negotiate confidentiality agreements and collaborate with faculty on presentations, licensing strategies, and decisions between exclusive or non-exclusive licenses, or alternative business models suitable for the innovation portfolio. Own and manage the digital and creative works non-exclusive license portfolio in Elucid, with primary responsibility for all products and transaction-level tracking of disclosures, agreements, amendments, and compliance milestones, working in coordination with the marketing analyst
Marketing and Summaries: Prepare non-confidential marketing summaries of innovations, highlighting the innovators backgrounds, technology descriptions, and commercial applications for industry distribution and website posting. When appropriate, coordinate with TOVs market analyst and/or business development manager for startups to produce marketing materials and opportunities, such as marketplace listings, spotlights, and events to encourage licensing opportunities and innovation recognition
Intellectual Property Protection: Assist the Director of Intellectual Property and outside counsel in preparing and prosecuting intellectual property applications to protect the commercially significant aspects of inventions and other innovations, including pursuing patent, copyright, or trademark registrations best suited for the innovation portfolio
Evaluate Innovations: Evaluate innovation disclosures from community members for commercial potential in collaboration with the Director of Intellectual Property, outside counsel, and innovators

Disclosure and Protection of Creative Works: Support faculty and staff in the disclosure of creative, digital, and non-patent intellectual property, including software, digital media, educational content, branding elements, and design-based works. Coordinate copyright and trademark protection activities in collaboration with internal and external legal resources
Brand and Trademark Stewardship: Assist in the management and protection of institutional brand-related intellectual property developed through research or creative activities in partnership with NYULH Office of General Counsel, NYULH Marketing and Communications, NYU Communications and Public Affairs, NYU Office of General Counsel, and the Director of Intellectual Property. Coordinate trademark filings, guide appropriate brand use, and support commercialization opportunities when appropriate
Portfolio Monitoring and Compliance: Maintain awareness of license terms associated with creative and digital works, monitor compliance with usage and branding requirements, ensure accurate reporting, and identify when amendments or new agreements may be needed
Faculty Support and Education: Provide guidance to creators on copyright, trademark, ownership, and distribution considerations relevant to digital and creative works. Offer education on institutional policies and support the development of commercialization strategies
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree
Minimum three years of experience in business development, developing and marketing of creative or digital works, software, or new technologies, and negotiating research and license agreements, or related activities
Excellent administrative, negotiating, interpersonal and communication skills necessary
Ability to work effectively with senior management, academics, and executives from industry, and to achieve consensus and promote good long-term relationships
Preferred
PhD and/or MBA, JD or LLM, experience with intellectual property, licensing, and commercialization
Experience with copyright, trademark, or digital content licensing is strongly preferred
Previous experience in higher education or hospital environments is a plus
