WGL - Principal Pipeline Facilities Integrity & Process Engineer

Responsibilities

Leads complex piping, equipment integrity assessment, and inspection projects for gate stations, pressure-regulation facilities, stored energy plants, and propane storage assets
Directs engineering evaluations of identified integrity issues and designs comprehensive P&M strategies to reduce risk and extend asset life
Oversees contractor work packages, construction scope reviews, material selection, permitting activities, technical bid evaluations, and quality assurance documentation
Conducts strength, pressure-rating, material compatibility, and SMYS-based engineering calculations for facility piping and equipment
Develops and maintains mechanical integrity programs for pressure vessels, stored-energy systems, relief devices, and critical high-hazard equipment
Serves as the lead PSM engineer for FIMP/SIMP facilities, ensuring compliance with mechanical integrity, MOC, PSSR, process hazard analysis, and operating discipline elements
Facilitates HAZOP, HAZID, What-If, LOPA, and facility siting studies for existing and new facilities
Provides technical direction for the development and maintenance of PSM governance documents for propane and other high-hazard energy facilities
Leads risk assessments using FIMP/SIMP risk models and supports the identification and prioritization of risk-reduction projects
Performs and reviews incident investigations using TapRooT®, 5-Whys, cause mapping, or other root cause methodologies
Ensures adherence to PHMSA 49 CFR Part 192 Subpart O, OSHA PSM, API RP-1171, NFPA 59, ASME codes, and other relevant federal and state requirements
Serves as a technical representative during PHMSA, state commission, OSHA, or third-party audits and inspections
Prepares regulatory documentation and responses, technical justifications, and engineering analyses required for compliance actions or investigations
Leads multidisciplinary project teams and provides technical mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers
Coordinates integrity evaluations with Operations, Asset Management, Compliance, Pipeline Safety, and Process Engineering
Guides long-term planning for inspection programs, remediation strategies, and risk-based capital investment prioritization
Stays current with emerging regulations, PSM trends, leading practices, inspection technologies, and integrity management methodologies
Stays current with new PHMSA DOT 192 regulations, advisory bulletins, and OSHA PSM updates to verify inclusion and implementation of new requirements with IMPs and PSM governance documents

Required

Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Materials, Petroleum, or related discipline required)
Minimum of 10+ years of experience in integrity management, mechanical integrity, or process safety engineering in natural gas, hydrocarbon processing, or chemical industries
HAZOP Facilitator certification required or ability to obtain
Demonstrated experience with PHMSA pipeline integrity rules, OSHA PSM, ASME B31.3, API 570/510/580, NFPA 59, and other applicable codes and standards
Experience leading complex facility integrity investigations, risk assessments, and failure analyses

Preferred

Master's degree or advanced engineering degree preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
Preferred certifications: AMPP (formerly NACE) PCIM, API inspection credentials, pipeline integrity certifications
