Engineering Intern Level 1
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is responsible for managing the city’s transportation network. The Engineering Level 1 Internship offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience in various engineering and planning roles within the agency, contributing to transportation projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities
Develop design alternatives for transportation projects
Perform field visits
Prepare traffic control device work orders
Draft in AutoCAD
Prepare striping drawings for official records
Estimate project costs for traffic striping, signage, signal, and civil work scope
Analyze signal timing
Review construction work zones and site plans
Support public outreach
Prepare legislation
Support the evaluation of the E-bus pilot program
Participate in design review, project planning and engineering maintenance support for electrical distribution utility
Support the Cable Car systems, storage tank systems, elevator/escalator systems and a variety of other transportation infrastructure
Qualification
Required
At the time of submitting application, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college pursuing a degree in one of the following fields: Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, or Transportation Engineering
Possess a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree in one of the above fields from an accredited university or community college AND be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college pursuing a degree in a related field
You must be currently enrolled and continuing in an associate, undergraduate or graduate program or entering/continuing a graduate program in the Fall 2026
Students enrolled in second-to-last or last semester and will soon graduate are also encouraged to apply as you may still be selected for the program within six months of graduation
No previous experience is necessary

You must attach the following: Proof of your community college, undergraduate or graduate school education (Master's or PhD program). This can be official or unofficial transcript, diploma, class schedule, or other document that shows your current enrollment or student status with your school
Submission date for college transcripts may be extended if it is impossible to obtain by January 16, 2026. Applicants must submit a signed statement explaining why transcripts cannot be obtained by the filing date. Extension requests will be granted on a case-by-case basis. It is the applicant's sole responsibility that all application materials and support documentation be received in a complete and legible form

Preferred
Interest in public-sector careers in transportation, especially public transit, walking, and bicycling
Understanding of the impact of transportation decisions on marginalized communities, including people of color, people with low-incomes, and people with disabilities
Experience working with marginalized communities
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, including, but not limited to, examples drawn from: school, work, community activities, extracurricular activities, team sports and/or volunteering experiences
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively
Ability to adapt to new situations, changing priorities, or unexpected challenges to meet project goals
Ability to analyze evidence, critically consider options, and draw conclusions from data
Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and/or transportation)
Applied knowledge of Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or other software
